How to

Postby fvjuke » Thu Mar 13, 2008 1:29 pm

Hello everyone,

here is another question on how to improve my performance on FSX.

Here is my set up:

AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core 5000+
2 G RAM
ATI radeon X1650
Vista Home Edition Premium

I can play the game fine and with setting at moderate to high I get around 20-22 fps at low altitude (3000ft).

What should I do to improve those fps at higher settings ?

Add more RAM ? or,
Upgrade video card with something like nVidia 8800 GTS 512m ?

Looking forward to your advice,
Thanks

First i would go for the X2 6400 its so cheap (CPU), that will give you at least another 6 fps .what speed is your ram get the DDR2 800 cas 4 if possible, 2 gig is all you really need, never seen fsx use it asll yet. Graphics card will give least improvemnt but if you upgrade get the 512 meg card.

Thanks for your reply.

So it looks like RAM is not the issue here.

How many more fps do you think I would get with the nVidia 8800GTS 512 ram instead of my current ATI x1650 ?

Is it worth the 299$ CAN they are asking ?

I noticed your set up, what fps do you get at mid to high settings ?

Thanks again,

Yes, grab the 8800GTS and perhaps a faster processor. 300$ CAN seems about right... but to check visit www.newegg.com. If Newegg has the same thing for dramatically less than yours, find another Canadian shop. (Newegg is USA only).

Half of them tweaks are plain wrong.

i had a 9000 gs 256 then upgraded toc8800, and it made no difference to my framrates, but a processor upgared and ram upgarde was noticeable. FSX is ver bandwidth intensive so the faster everything is the better the framerates. mind you anything above 15FPSis fine in FSX .

Read this entire thread:

May seem like a lot of reading, but it will vastly imrpove your FSX performance without spending any $

I can say that I've followed as much of that guide as I can and I will never look back.  It should be published as an insert for the RTM!

Ok guys thanks for your answers.

Here is where I am at now:

Same Rig except I now have a BFG nVidia 8800GTS 512mg

I used the following settings:
http://www.highflightsimulations.com/recommended.html

Now I get 15 fps at high altitude and around 8-10fps when landing at Toronto or O'Hare.

My previous fps were obsviously wrong, sorry about that.

My question to you guys is:
Should I upgrade my CPU to:

Intel Core Duo E6750 2,66ghertz/1333/4mg cache

My current set up as stated in my original post has
AMD Dual core 5000+, 2.66ghertz , 1M cache

Will that help me increase my FPS at the same settings ?

to upgrade to the intel you would have to repalce the mother board but ceratinly it seems that intel are much faster then AMD theses days, so get fastest intel you can afford. You would be bettr off getting one ariound 3 ghz to ntice any real improvement. but it is the best option.f you replace vid card get the 512 meg version i have the 320 meg and sometimes shes chockers, going to replace it later with 512.

Ok Guys,

I think I will upgrade to a faster Intel CPU.

When you say, get the fastest you can afford, do you mean in terms of Ghz ?

I am hesitating between these:
1)INTEL CORE 2 DUO E8500 3.16G/1333/6M/S775 and,
2)INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6850 3.00G/1333/4M/S775 and,
3)INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6850 3.00G/1333/4M/S775

Of course, I will need to change my MB.

Any advice on these ?

Based on what I could read, it looks like even with one of these I might have to do some overclocking which I have ever done.

Looking forward to hear back from you guys.

Thanks again for helping, this is a great community.

Hey intel 3 gh will out perform mine witout sny issues, and yes faster is more important than cores, but 2 core are better then 1, speed 9 bandwidth) is important in fsx so fastest cpu will be best bet.

Best for fsx is quad core. No doubt about it. :)
