Carrier Landings . . . and a Sploosh!

So, on a whim I went flying about in a Maule Orion out of KSFO looking for the static carrier located somewhere in that area.  Lo, I found it!

After a preliminary pass I decided to try and land.  I mean, a Maule can go very, very slow, and is capable of making some rather short landings.

Bwah ha ha ha!  I made the deck alright.  But, I still ended up sliding right off the other side . . . sideways, as it turns out, from a desperate attempt to use the differential brakes to turn down the length of the carrier.

Well, that was rather exciting if futile.  And I may just try it again.  In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone had actually managed to land on one of the static carriers in FSX?

I guess I should mention that:

1) I am not using Acceleration;
2) I know there are mobile carriers with recovery capability; and,
3) This is all just in fun and curiosity, and I am not too worried if I can make this happen or not (would be a great screenshot, though, ne?).

A bit water-logged,

Have a look in the Simviation scenery section of the downloads.  I`ve uploaded some GPS enabled standard carriers.  The GPS acceleration carriers are in MISC for some strange reason???  These allow you to start on the carrier deck from the FSX menu and/or locate them by GPS.  The standard ones are static and the acceleration ones give the choice of static or moving.  Full GPS use is only available when static.

I`m currently working on a real life EGCB Barton Manchester, the Alpha Piper oil rig at Aberdeen with enhanced Aberdeen Harbour and Peterhead Harbour plus two moving cargo ships, Skegness EGNI airfield (the Billy Butlins one), Scarborough X9ED (Eddsfield-unlicensed but real life) and Stretton Airfield near Warrington UK (HMS Blackcap) next to the M56 motorway.  ;D

Did you set the wind to come from the east? The 'static' default CV
off San Francisco is pointed in the wrong direction for the prevailing
winds here. The wind is normally 10-15 knots from the west. So if
you were using real world weather there is a good chance you had
a tail wind that would make things a bit more difficult.

For reference, this evening after downloading a FS9 Gloster F5 and
making a couple of adjustments so that I could use it in FSX, I made
3 perfect landings on moving CVN's off  Honolulu.
The carriers 25-30 knot speed plus an approach speed round
75-80 knots in the Gloster made it a piece of cake :)
Wind over the deck makes a big difference...

I just made managed landing (succesfully) a C-130 on named Carrier, just set the wind at max. and ~75

Back in FS9 I could land the Cessnas on the deck, if I'm not mistaken.
Is it more difficult in FSX ?

After several tries I managed to put the Mual on the carrier you are talking about. Try coming in with the parking break set. Its a bit difficult as the Maul likes to flip but completly possible.

I friend of mine in New Zealand, landed his a-6 on a carrier and was showing in screenshots how he did it so I chalenged him to try to land a connie on one and true to his word he did.  Beautiful job on the screenshots also, a must see for Connie lovers, like myself. ;D ;D ;D     http://nzff.org/forum/index.php?showtop ... try8209220 really worth the visit

...i've seen a similar video (was posted here a while ago). And it was my appeal (additionally to the screenshot cont.) to try it in FSX!

Well, and I could imagine to try the 747 in the next days, too!

Well, I did finally manage to land the Maule Orion onto the desk of the carrier parked off the coast of San Francisco.  It was an ugly landing, but I was so pleased to be taxiing around the deck there, I had to take a screen shot!

Image

I think the hardest thing was not the length of the deck, but the fact that the Maule kept bouncing when I was landing, which meant that the wheels weren't in contact with the deck long enough for the brakes to slow me down sufficiently.  Strangely, I don't have this problem when landing on normal runways.  I think it was just the nervousness from aiming for that little spot in the ocean.

Speaking of aiming for the carrier, once I came in too low and got a huge surprise as I flew beneath the main deck and inside the carrier!

Well, in the end it all worked out, though I don't think the Navy will be calling me anytime soon to start flight training.  Thank goodness I have FSX to try such things!

;D

Its bumpy because its not undefined, there are alot of add-ons in SimV about aircraft carriers

(ps try in a piper cub its easy)
