Defrag

NickN:  you stress the importance of a NAME defrag.  I have FSX on a separate RAID0 drive(s) and use O&O Complete/Name for the defrag option.

I have the OS and other applications on another drive.  Which option do you use?  I have thought of SPACE followed by Complete/Access because the need is different.  It doesn't seem logical to push Windows to the end because of its alphabetical position.

Pity Bill Gates didn't call Windows something like Aperture, then it would have been placed closest to the outside of the disk!

You are on vista and O&O 10 so the access the software has to the partition is not the same as XP

at the same time.. stop thinking and follow directions

LOL

NAME defrag . . . SPACE defrag . . . er . . .

:o

Can someone explain or point me to the original thread explaining these things?  Apparently there is more than one kind of defrag . . .

Very, very confused,
Darrin

So if i'm using the freeware O&O defraglite, which only features the space method am I doomed?  :-/

SPACE defrag...

Finds all parts of file scattered around the hard drive and places them together, then it compacts them so there is no slack space between the files

COMPLETE\NAME defrag ....

Places all files in a perfect alphanumerical order and in v8.5 makes sure there is no slack space between the files.

With v8.5 You can run a periodic SPACE defrag once a week and not damage the NAME defrag. With v10 they changed how a NAME defrag works and it leaves SPACES between the files, therefore a SPACE defrag will fill in those gaps and ruin a NAME defrag which is why I wont use it. Those on Vista have no choice.

The full version when set up EXACTLY as I outlined WITH the reg tweaks I posted will also optimize the Windows boot and keep that perfectly clean.

The way O&O NAME defrag does the job is by removing all the wasted hard drive head movements which in turn makes file retrieval much faster and also removes the extra CPU cycles HDD places on a system, therefore giving all that back to FSX/FS9

At the same time it organizes the MFT catalog

The MFT catalog is critical to the smooth operation of the system. Think of it like the system a library uses.. OK, now... if the card catalog at a library is in proper alpha-numerical order... and, the BOOKS are not mixed up... how fast can you find that book from the catalog as compared to finding that book if both the catalog and the location of the book were not in perfect order

of course a computer is much faster than a human... but every CPU cycle AND ESPECIALLY every HDD head seek added to an operation REMOVES resources from a heavy hitting software such as FSX. So what you are doing is removing redundant and unneeded operations with the method I outlined and when you add up all those operations you get a huge reduction in overhead that FSX or other programs now have to work with.

Which is better.. a HDD and CPU seeking:

MFT - FILE CHUNK - MFT - FILE CHUNK - MFT -FILE CHUNK - MFT - FILE CHUNK - MFT - FILE CHUNK - MFT - FILE CHUNK - MFT - FILE CHUNK - MFT - FILE CHUNK - MFT - FILE CHUNK - MFT - FILE CHUNK - MFT - FILE CHUNK = FILE IN MEMORY

or

MFT - FILE = FILE IN MEMORY

Understand?

Lets take that a step further... when a HDD is more than 75% full Windows starts REDUCING the MFT reserved space and cramping that critical zone. That is why I post NEVER allow a hard drive to go past 65% if you are looking for maximum efficiency and performance. I keep mine at 50% or under if possible but do exceed that from time to time... once I hit 70%, I upgrade my drives to compensate. less seek time which is also related to geometry on a disk means better performance, period. Access and Seek are resource killers. reduce those and you increase the resources available to FSX and any other hard hitting software.

You MUST follow my directions TO THE LETTER or it doesn

Brilliant Nick. I'll link this thread to the StudioV tutorials library.
