( I see help a lot, thought I'd mix it up alittle).
Just getting started with Fsx, went out bought a computer just for it, or so I thought. I've got a gateway FX with a quad core and a 8800GT.
I was looking forward to some time testing out a new Rapter or some vstol's.
I'm new to this computer $*&!, I've shut down spyware and defender,
I've changed the card to run on the performance setting, I've got SP1 and 2, settings are medium across the board, and still get those Irritating little freeze ups.
Did I get riped off!!!
thanx

You better make sure that you have all the newest drivers. Otherwise that's really weird, a quad-core running FSX on medium settings, CRAZY!! I've got a dual-core AMD 64 Athalon x2 3800 processor and i can run it on all ultra high settings. If it's not a driver issue, PM a moderator and see what troubleshooting they can do.

P.S. Make sure FSX is set to run on ALL 4 processors in the affinity section of the task manager. Sometimes, it is only set to run on one processor at first. (To get to this, run FSX, then hit alt+ctr+del to open the task manager. Then right click on the FSX task and hit "go to process" in the sub menu. Then right click on the process, go to affinity, and make sure that FSX is set to run on all the processors 0-3. (prossesor 0 is really the first one and prossesor 3 is the fourth one. All the boxes must be checked to make FSX run on all 4 prossesors)

>:( :-/All boxes are checked.
I'm running vista, don't know if that matters.
I get a weird frame around the fs when it loads. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times...........really want to figure this out.
Any other idea's?

Sorry, i'm out of ideas. That worked for me. You can try rolling back to Direct X 9, I heard that people were getting weird stuff with DX 10. If that does't work, try PMing Fly2e. He's one of the moderators. Maybe he can help.

i have a quad with 8800gt also with lots of freezeups in vista....is it only dx10 that uses 4 processors? how does a quad work in dx9?

DX10 or DX9 won't change how your processor performs too much. Yes, DX10 is more graphically advanced, thus more work for your processor; but my AMD single core (2.2GHz) can do Medium-High settings across the board with it still being very fly-able.

The ability to make use of the Processor is more tuned in with the OS than anything else.

I have a quad - qx6850 with an 8800GTX video card and Vista.

I have tried but found Dx10 to add so little that I now run Dx9 only.

SP1 and SP2  have been written to take advantage of multicore threading.  Therefore a quad core is a huge improvement in performance in my experience.

Threading works although sadly FSX does not make use of SLI, so a second vid card is of little use.

I get 4x3gigs of processing, and in a cpu hungry application like FSX it is a great leap forward.

Find your fsx.cfg file and add this to it:
[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=15

That should help... as should the stickes at the top of this section.

NickN advised that with SP2 there is no need to use the JobScheduler addition to the cfg file:

Is it
(a)unnecessary and harmful
(b)unnecessary and harmless
(c) necessary
