Are you running XP? Are you referring to your default fsx AI? If so, have to looked at the scenery\world\scenery folder to make sure that you have trafficAircraft.bgl active? Some times AI add-on programs will disable your default fsx.
It sounds like you've already checked your fsx.cfg file to make sure it has the SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes.

Thank you Kagazi-sama. FSX and a number of gurus on this forum have taught me more about the game, and my computer than I have ever known. At work I yell for a tech, and a 19yr old turns up, calms me down, and fixes the problem in a second. But not at home.
I simply did not know where to look, so now I have just altered the line in world scenery\scenery and I have got the default AI back.
Tomorrow I'll see if I can install MyTraffic again. There is still no made for FSX AI traffic add-on as yet.

Middle of the year JustFlight should release Traffic X, with civilian and military traffic for FSX, works on Vista too allegedly.

MyTraffic X is, so is Ultimate Traffic X, and WorldOfAI is fully compatible with FS2004 and FSX, even works on my Acceleration setup.

But MyTraffic X and Traffic still show themselves as made-over FS9 add-ons. Planes without wheels, oleos, tails, you name it, pop-up all over the place. And the models are made angularly and not cylindrically like a real plane.
But they are far better than the default, and are more framerate friendly. And the callsigns make sense.
