When i am given the clearance to land by ATC does mean i have to immediantly turn and begin final?  Also how far is a good distance for all big jet aircraft e.g Boeing and Airbus?

Thank you for your help. I asked this because i guess i took to long landing and when i was like 100ft away from the runway they cleared another plane to taxi onto the same one!

That's not normal.
Maybe you forgot to ackowledge your landing clearance with the ATC.
Normally, when a runway has been assigned to a landing plane, nobody can cross it, even if the plane is still miles away. This happened to me while taxiing, I could not cross the runway and I was desperately trying to locate the landing plane... I could start to see it agter 2 minutes, though...
