ATC is getting you lined up with the (correct) runway. They pretty much do what they wanna do...if you wanna do a direct IFR without them telling you what to do...well...I dunno. Just follow what they say. I'm almost completely positive that real commercial pilots stay on the direct GPS line because ATC is keeping you away from other traffic.

Yea, Wii is right. The ATC takes you off course in order to follow procedures for an ILS landing on the active runway. This maybe a little bit complicated for you so you might want to read the turtorial or try the lessons in FSX (or you can select a visual approach in the ATC window). But trust me ATC knows how to get you to your destination and it is almost always easiest to follow their directions, since they line you up very nicely to the runway.

Yup. If you choose VFR they don't guide you in.

I think (once ATC gets you off the ground) you can select a different approach and you can select a visual (there is also NDB VOR ILS and visual....correct me if I'm wrong) instead...haven't tried it before.

Thats what I meant, you could select visual thats probably the easiest, but you generally won't go wrong following ATC's directions.
