Constant crashing? Only recent issue...

Postby Invertalon » Fri Feb 01, 2008 2:04 pm

FSX has always been quite reliable for me... No crashing, nothing really out of its normal quirks, but lately, it crashes on me all the time.

Usually, it will load my initial flight that I begin just fine, play fine, etc... But if I say, exit the game to make a new flight and re-load, it will get to 100% and then I get a FSX shutdown error and it shuts down. Or if im playing for instance, and I made a replay. If I go to watch the replay, it crashes. I don't understand why it is doing this!

Because of it, I uninstalled FSX and reinstalled it all, including SP1 and SP2. The only tweaks in the CFG I have done are the building and tree limit for autogen, bufferpools, and timefraction or whatever it is. They have been used before without issue so I doubt that is my problem?

Specs:

E6750 Core 2 Duo @ 2.66mhz overclocked to 3.6
EVGA 8800GT superclocked edition graphics card
2GB ram

I just want to find a solution for this annoying problem. It is only recent and dunno what happened to cause it. Is it possibly SP2?

Thanks!
System Specs:
- Core 2 Duo E6750 (overclocked to 3.6ghz)
- Geforce 8800GT superclocked edition

Could be any number of things. I'd start with some simple checks like CPU temp (as you're overclocking) and check your PSU isn't overheating and shorting out (I've had this twice now), easiest to spot if there is an ozone or burnt plastic smell ;)

Actually the temps on the processor are very good and stay quite low, the graphics card as well. But I will look into it more, maybe its something beyond what the tests show, haha. Thanks for the suggestion!

I`d hazard a guess that the dll.xml has been corrupted in the SP2 install, a common problem with SimConnect which effects the file menu.  Only a guess but here is my working dll.xml which may be different to yours as I have different features in use.  Ultimately though, the format and layout should remain much the same.  The file is found as follows (with show all files turned on in control panel)....

C:\Users\Steve\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX

   Launch
   dll.xml
   False
   False

       Traffic Toolbox
       False
       False
       ..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Traffic Toolbox SDK\traffictoolbox.dll

       Visual Effects Tool
       False
       False
       ..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Special Effects SDK\visualfxtool.dll

       Level-D Simulations
       False
       False
       Modules\LVLD.dll

       FSUIPC 4
       False
       Modules\FSUIPC4.dll

       PMDG Options
       False
       PMDG\DLLs\PMDGOptions.dll

       PMDG Events
       False
       PMDG\DLLs\PMDGEvents.dll

       PMDG Sounds
       False
       PMDG\DLLs\PMDGSounds.dll

       Object Placement Tool
       False
       False
       ..\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Mission Creation Kit\object_placement.dll

I achieved a properly working file by completing a clean install as follows...

FSX Deluxe, Acceleration (inc SP1 and SP2), SDK, SDK SP1a, Acceleration SDK.

An alternative is available depending on what version of FSX you have and if using Acceleration and/or SP1 + SP2.  Do not install SP1 separate if installing Acceleration.  These rules have to be adhered to if you wish a working system.
