FSX Menu problem

Ive been around here mostly on the payware forums, but just the other day got a new computer....amazing specs....and i went and bought FSX (as it wouldnt run on my previous computer, for anything more than a slide show)
The good news is that FSX works great. Partly! I installed it without any problems, then installed the SP1 and SP2. I then started it up and started to fly.
However, when i come to click on the menu bar at the top, to change the weather/time/season/ acft etc etc, the sim freezes. It wont do anything untill i press the escape button, and then it just flips back to the flight, and doesnt give me the menu option i was trying to get. This is the same for when i want to end a flight. It does exactly the same....so to exit FSX at the mo, i have to do a CTRL ALT DEL !!!!
I hope you guys can help me, as after all this time waiting for a new computer to finally run FSX, i cannot get the sim to play ball!! Really frustrated! >:(
