The straight dope on FSX sound

I did a search here and elsewhere, but can't find the info I'm looking for...

I believe I heard somewhere that with FSX, one can have nav/comm audio (the sim's ATC and/or your mic and online mics of others) in  a headset, and all other audio in the speakers... I can only assume this involves dual sound cards, or...?
And what about FS9? This can't be done with FS9, regardless of hardware, can it?

Still haven't decided yet about FSX, but if this capability exists with FSX but not FS9, I want it.
Seems a silly reason to upgrade to FSX, but that's me... ;D

Once the simpit is done I want engines, environment, etc pumping out of the 5.1 speakers but I'd like to wear a headset with only nav/comm feeding to that... like in real life.

Yes.. you can assign voice to a different sound device in FSX..  not sure about FS9 (been a long time)..

You find it in the Settings/Sound screen.. there's a seperate pull-down for voice...

I have FSX set up like that on my system.  I have to use two sound cards though.  As Brett_Henderson said, in the settings menu, go to sound.  You can assign voice to one sound card and all other sounds to another sound card.

It's pretty neat having it set up this way.  The only problem I'm having with it, that my mic will not work.  I only get sound.  I posted a request for help in the hardware section, but nothing.  I think it's a problem with Vista and my sound cards.

I may have misread this but I`ll say it anyway, you can then check it out further.  I`m sure for one reason or another someone said we lost that facility after one of the SP`s......

Are you talking about hooking up something like these:

www.fspilotshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=1106

no; that's a traffic program.

www.sportys.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&did=19&product_id=9425

No; that's a transceiver (LOL). A real radio is not going to work too well with MSFS... ;)

I have my set up on 5.1 Surround sound and when using that setup you can send the Voice to a separate output to the aircraft sound.

As long as you have say you Sim sound to speakers (using 6 channel Optical or Coaxial connections ) then use your PC's Front (or line out what ever is available) and your Mike connection it all should work.

I don't know about FS9 tho.

Tho I MUST Recommend that you insure that you have the Newest Sound Drivers for you PC.

I have just updated my drivers and found that they where more then a year out of date and its solved a number of little niggles with FSX and some other stuff i use.
