Square nav lights: is this a bug?

Out of the blue - I've made no changes of any kind - the nav lights on all my aircraft,including AI, have turned into large squares, as have runway marker lights. Help!

I've seen plenty of black squares but never this.

This is typically caused by the sim failing to locate a needed texture for the effect (.fx) file.

Open the .fx file in question and see what bitmap it uses (see the ParticleAttributes.n section):

Texture=fx_2.bmp

Then, look in the ..\Effects\Texture folder and make sure that bitmap is actually present.

Aside from the above, the only other reason the effects would display like that would be a video card's driver misbehaving.

I was going to say, he did install something, the aircraft is not default so it may have overwritten the effects files or are missing the textures in the FX files the aircraft uses

If he is seeing that on all planes more than likely the aircraft developer included default file names (I hate it when they do that) and they overwrote the original FSX files.

Overwriting a default .fx file is simply begging for trouble.  It's also quite possible that if that has happened, the replacement bitmap may be 24bit format, and not DXT1 as used by FSX.

it is definately an issue with overwriting a fx file, happened to me yesterday after changing runway textures.  I ended up just repairing the software with disc1 and 2, which fixed the problem.
