Hello, While flying I keep getting the box that pops up and says something along the lines of computer out of memory must restart. Can anyone tell me what is going on because I do not see how I can be out of memory. I am running XP Media Center Edition 2002, FSX w/Acceleration, 8800 GTX video and have 4 meg of ram.
Regards,
Rod

I'd assume you mean 4 Gb RAM, not 4 megs..
What are your other specs, CPU, Motherboard, RAM type (DDR or DDR2)

1st off, you may have 4GB of RAM, but XP can only use 2.99GB of that, even with the regedit it still doesn't use more than 3.5GB. Your second problem is most likely because you have a whole bunch of background services running ontop of FS. Remember that FS uses around 1.9GB+ of RAM depending on your system settings. So trying to run say iTunes + a browser window + FSX you will run out of RAM.
Cheers
Cameron.

Cameron,
How do you do a regedit or can you provide a link to instructions on how do do one?

If you are running more than 2GB of memory and are using FSX-SP2, disable hidden files and folder, then on the root C:\ you will find a file named: boot.ini
Open it in notepad and add the follwoing to the end of the OS boot line:
/3GB/Userva=2560
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professsional" /fastdetect /3GB /Userva=2560
NOTE: The Userva= value should ONLY be tweaked based on values which are divisible evenly by 64
This will allow you to use more than 2 gigs of your 4 but you are never going to get 4gigs to work without a 64bit OS, more like 2.6
WARNING: setting that higher than 2560 will most likely crash the computer. Windows needs a reserve address space for the OS and video card memory mapping
Here is the MS KB readup on the line and its use

Cameron,
As far as I know I am running next to nothing in backround. Due to a problem after I installed Windows Media Player 11 earlier this summer HP had me start up in safe mode and disable most of what was automatically loaded on boot. Tonight I will go back into this and whatever may have been added I will disable it. Right know the only changes that I can think of is I recently installed O&O Defrag 10 and updated my NVIDIA drivers. I have icons for those now so those definitely need to be disabled. Tonight I will also download and run CPUZ and let you know the information on my mother board.

Rod

OOM (out of memory) errors with FSX are a well know issue because FSX tries to allocate more than most systems can provide. Also, with SP2 FSX the fse.exe file has been marked to use morethan 2GB
This issue is well known and documented and usually affects people who install more than 2GB of memory in Windows 32bit OS's
before you go tearing through software and drivers I would try the switch.
http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/archive/2 ... space.aspxif you are running FSX-SP2 the fsx.exe file is already marked for the 3GB switch... you only need to modify the Windows boot line

Nick,
From what I can read from all the links this applies to Vista or XP Pro and I am running XP Media Center, which I believe would be XP Home so is there a link that show how I change my system from 2 meg to 3 meg?

Nick,
Never mind, I do belive that I figured out that multi(0)disk(0)..... is the boot line and I add /3GB/.... after that.
Thanks!
Can any PC be upgraded to XP 64 bit? I have a dual core HP. Does the motherboard have to be setup for 64 bit? I know that this is way off topic for a tread in FSX, but I thought that I would ask.
Regards and thanks again!
