The case that fs10 is stored in is a peice of crap. It scratches the disk pretty bad, causing it to not install properly. It may of worked all of a sudden if the disk got cleaned, or it may of just been by chance.

As for why your computer blew up, it may of been because fs10 makes puts your computer at 100% utilisation, which may of caused part failure (Do to temperature, or just the age of the computer). It is extremely unlikely that it will blow your new computer up. Extremely unlikely.

I had a similar problem when I had to reinstall FSX after having to reinstall Windows XP I could not get it to go past disk 1 without a missing or corrupt cab file error. It turned out to be caused by a couple of things.
1) I had to update the drivers on my DVD player/Burner. Even though it was brand new the drivers it used were generic I had to download new drivers from the manufacturers web site.
2) I also found out that if you use NERO that there is a conflict with Microsoft FSX. I had to uninstall it in order to install FSX. There are other burner software that has the same kind of problem for one reason or another they will not read some of the cab files on the disks.
Believe me this problem drove me nuts for some time before I finally stumbled upon the cure. Even a Microsoft Tech. was unable to help me. We tried all kinds of methods to install FSX with no luck at all.
But it had nothing to do with scratched disks.
