I have 2 a/c with the same problem. One is an ATR72 the other a f27-500. Both have different panels the only change in them is they both have a 737-400 A/P. After takeoff they hold the rwy heading with the a/p on or off. they will not answer to aileron input. Altitude and speed changes seem to be ok. What is causing this? I am at a loss.

Sounds like the autopilot is engaged... even though it seems to be turned off..
edit: I seem to remember that a wing-leveler can be left on.. switch to a plane that has the wing-leveler function to make sure it's disengaged..

...mmm...well sounds like the same thing that happens in FS9 in some planes........try doing the same thing to the aircraft.cfg file of the affected plane......... which is to add to the Autopilot section of the plane the lines ......
use_no_default_bank=1
use_no_default_pitch=1
..will probably do the trick....commoner

Thanks all. Your suggestions did not cure the problem however it put me on 7he right track.The f27-500 by Mike Stone was in the same package as an f27-200 which worked fine. I took the a/p section from the 200 cfg and put it in the 500 cfg deleting the original a/p section and cured the problem.What the difference between the two is I dont know. Now to see if it will cure the atr.
