I was wondering if anyone knew how or even if it's possible to get to the carrier during free flight in FSX Acceleration. I would love to fly other planes onto the deck. Thanks

There's one in Norfolk, VA in the naval yards. I believe it is of the new type, but I am not positive.

if you are after a carrier made for FSX, this one is not too bad at all, though the author claims it is an early 'demo' release.  It even has some AI traffic of prowlers,a hawkeye and a Seahawk which fly from the carrier to nearby Carribean airports.   I quite like it, though as the author admits, it is a little short for a CVN.    I removed the steam effect though, that i did not like.

There are also a bunch of highly detailed FS9 ones that, with a little AFCAD adjustment to the deck height, can be made landable.  If you have more time on your hands, you can also get the deck lighting correctly alligned for FSX , and they look great at night. Look under the FS9 scenery section here at simV for a bunch of them in various locations, and they can be located where you wish as well.  The one off Perth in Western Australia, smack in the middle of Perth Controlled Airspace, is always tempting to use when I fly online at Vatsim.  Just kidding.  :P

did I mention SimV has good carriers ?  ;)

owensm74:
If you can fly from it in a mission, then you should be able to start from that location in the Airports list:

When in the mission go to the map.  Look for the carriers airport code.  Search for that in the 'go to airport' page.  It should be part of the scenery with NAV aids as well I would imagine.  Where is it located ?  My acceleration is still on order so I cant check this for you. let us know how you go Owensm74.

Umm thanks Layne, I can read.  Being Down Under, I do not yet have acceleration.  I was offerring my addition to this thread, which does relate to carriers if I am not mistaken.  The default FSX carrier is complete rubbish, and if the acceleration model is anything like those in the default scenery, then I would rather use the ones which have been available for download here at simV, even the FS9 ones which, with a little work, can look and work quite nice in FS10.

Depends if the carrier is a mission or scenery object. If this works on the same principle as in CFS, mission objects can only be used in missions.

Carrier can not be used in Free Flight. It is at N40 and W67 in the mission.

The carrier CAN be used outside the mission, allthough I haven't tried the launcher, or landing with a hook, I did land a cessna on it, so it's landable.

Tested the one in Pearl harbor. You can use the F-18 on the cat as well as snag the wires on landing, but since the carrier isn't moving and is pointing towards trees on the shore, both are tricky.

Interesting thing: The carrier only shows up when I have my large ship traffic turned up 100%, then it shows up in the mouth of the harbor. This means its tied into the traffic, suggesting that if there arn't moving ones out there allready, the possibility of making routes for it to follow might exsist with the right tools.  Don't ask me how, it's nothing I know much about.  :)

Anyway, to sum up, Yes there is a carrier, Yes you can use it, and to get it to show up entering Pearl harbor, turn your large ship traffic to 100%

It works with the F/A-18 (see pic below), but not with the F-14D Package 3 for FSX. It would be nice of someone could update it, but i dont think anyone knws how to, except for the ACEs team.

Yes, the carrier model will work on free flight.

I suggest you get this utility from the Avsim library as it will place carriers at
20 different locations worldwide. The carriers are moving and have escort
ships as well.

http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=96551

I just finished making some traps on a moving CVN I placed off the
Golden Gate using the Acceleration F-18.

The author of the above package also created one that lets you
create your own routes and fleet composition so you can place
the fleets anywhere you want and define the routes with Google Earth.
The package uses the FSX carrier model which was updated in
Acceleration.
To get this package, download the above package and then  go to the
authors site ( in the documentation ) and look for the AI Boat Compiler.

He has also just uploaded another package to Avsim, "aicarriers2.zip",
which lets you place a carrier while in free flight at your current position.
You can then steer the fleet from your cockpit or just let it sail along
the initial course. It will steam for the duration of your flight and you
can land on it.

You know, there must be a few carriers, because, its looks as if theres a whole pacfic fleet! I went flying a 6:36 AM yesterday, and at NPS, there was 3 aircraft carriers, and sevarl escorts. (Ships & Ferries traffic has to be at max.)
