Hmmm? Do you talk to ATC? Do you ask permission to taxi/takeoff from the tower? If your not doing this then your radio's will not have been tuned to the airfields frequency and ATC can't talk to you. It is you who has to tune into them. If you do tune in and you do request takeoff etc and you are just worried because it goes a little quiet when in flight thats pretty much normal when flying in quiet airspace or around smaller airports. I'm guesing that you're flying VFR? and that you haven't filed a flight plan to ATC? If it is VFR then as soon as you're clear of the airfield its all down to you basically, you do the navigation you decide where you want to go, so ATC doesn't really need to speak to you, unless to warn you of other aircraft or frequency changes.

However if you file a flight plan then thats when ATC will be giving you directions and vectors! And you can't get them to shut up!  ;)

Make sure you have the AI traffic turned up high enough for traffic to be in the area.. and then make sure you have your radio tuned to the tower/CTAF that's nearest to you. And obviously, if you've asked for flight following.. or are talking to ground/tower on your way out of an airport.. or have asked for landing clearance.. or have filed IFR.... you'll be talking to them yourself.

If you have access to the frequencies (and have enough AI traffic), you can listen to the various conversations on all the approaches, departures and ATC centers..
