Installation error 1628

Postby pepper_airborne » Sat Jul 21, 2007 2:40 pm

Hey guys, i finaly got my new rig to run properly, i had some trouble with incompatible memory and that kept me messin about for atleast a month. But i encountered the 1628 failed to complete installation error. I have no cleu what to do, after searching on the V, the internet, and MS and FSinsider website. Someone suggested it is the DVD drive, but that is not really plausible since i already used it to install 5 programs today. I tried updating the installer, but it is at no use so far. I got XP at SP2, a Gforce 8800GTS, Inter DuoCore, and a ASUS P5N-E SLI Motherboard. Im kinda baffled right now at what to do, since it installed in the blink of an eye at my old rig wich was hardly suited to run it. So if anyone can help me out then i would very much appreciate it.

I seem to recall this was something 2 others ran into but both had different solutions

Person 1 had some type of DVD or CD burn software installed that ran a special program at boot ( I think it was called a TSR program) which scans the DVD for what type of disk is in the drive and boots the CD or DVD software automatically. He removed the DVD software, (I think it was some kind of DVD player or movie software) and the problem stopped

Person 2 had to use the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool (download from MS)  to locate any and all FSX releated installer files and remove them, then FSX installed fine

OK, well assuming this is a clean install of Windows using a real Windows disk and not some OEM version (Dell, HP, etc) that has bloatware on it, and the driver disk did not install some type of DVD software automatically, ... and you were able to install FSX on the same hardware before, then I would check the DVD for scratches and also look into the possibility of some type of driver missing that may have to do with the DVD drive, even a chipset driver that may enable the higher IDE functions.

You mentioned you were having memory trouble. If there is something still not right in that area I can see that happening because of the amount of information being loaded from the DVD's.

Any AV or firewall running?

I got AVG running.

It is on a new harddrive, but i cant imagine it being broken, it would have given me trouble before, neither should the memory still give any problems, the guy in the shop tested it regiously, and it didnt give any errors. Neither is this a OEM install of XP.

Maby i wasnt completely clear in my problem, it startsup the vision installer, you see the loading bar, and then it gives me the error, it didnt even need to copy any files to the hardrive.

The DVD has some minor scratches, but it works fine on a older computer i got in this house, wich makes it feel like a random problem too me.

i wil try disabling AVG and then give it another go.

This is not about installing but there are MAJOR issues with AVG and FSX running at the same time. AVG causes stutters and blurs. Make sure you shut it down before flying

Did you install FSX on this computer before at all using the same DVD drive?

I know some older DVD drives may not read newer DVD disks. I always have 2 DVD drives in my system because there are disks one will read the other wont and visa-versa

This is an installer problem.  The DVD is attempted to be read but throws back errors on the read, therefore the 1628 code number.  It can be the media or the DVD drive.  I read of a guy who swore his DVD drive was ok, he finally relented and tried another and it worked no problem at all.  They have to give in sometime and with some of the crap on sale they don`t last long.

Try the copy trick, use the drive or someone elses (borrow one) to copy the contents of the DVD to the hard drive, then install from there.  Or borrow one and do the install from it.  Again, with scratches it could be the disks themselves too.

I tried copying it to a empty harddisk ,didnt work though. I decided to reformat my drive so it would have a clean install, but this time i got the error too when installing the Nvidia drivers. So im afraid something is bogged but i dont know what.

Hey guys, looks like i found the problem, at the shop they reinstalled XP with one of their copy's and it turns out the problem is probably the XP installation CD. So, if you experience these problems then this might be a solution!

Well, you did say it had minor scratches.  Some readers will manage, others have a weaker or incorrectly aligned laser and don`t.  It only needs a scratch, minor or not, on a crucial part of the data and the whole thing is kiboshed.  When these things first came out they were touted as virtually indestructible, yeah really!!!

It was not the FSX DVD, it was the XP cd, wich i blame my father for, he just throws the CD's and DVD's around.

LOL!

I knew scratches were most likely going to come into this somewhere    ;D

So the Windows install was corrupt, interesting. I will have to add that to the list of why that error may appear.
