With settings all the way down over the ocean, in a default plane.

I'm still going to count it :P

yes indeed, and I can get 100+ over photographic sceneries as well.  It's all in the Autogen.

BUT my gaming tech has been urging me to get a soundcard with onboard RAM.  His boss a commercial applications type claimed the onboard sound on my ASUS mobo was sufficient.

BUT the gamer said, games like FSX with a lot of sound written into them can use up to 25% of CPU.

He was right. A top of the line sound card has given me as many FPS as SP!.  So cumulatively the game is going really well - not counting micro-hitches and stutters.

An I didn't realise just how good the sound can be through a good dedicated card.

14fps with autogen at 6000/6000 Very Dense over Seattle. I got 20fps in rural areas but it still ran like crap regardless of framerate.

Zerotime:

I found after reading Phil Taylor's blog that a FFTF of .10 and a TBM of 30 has made the game run much more smoothly.

This may not suit you but it is worth the try - it certainly changed my experience for the better.  Obviously these numbers can be played around with.

I found I had nothing but blurries, stutters and hitches when I ran at .33 and above, and a TBM up in the numbers we used before SP1.

And having the sliders max-ed means nothing if you are getting lousy performance:  have you kept the default autogen numbers or have you reduced them? I run trees and buildings=1000.  Others may have them higher but I have traded autogen off against more AI to make the experience more realistic.
