I am forced to be away from my gaming puter until Monday night.  It'll give me a chance to learn from your experiences.  Members make sure you log in with the good and the bad, but also the quirks, tips and tricks as you find them out.

1. Makes sure you return any original files such as autogen, textures, etc to their original locations. For hacked autogen files you will most likely find you will no longer need them but they can be returned after SP1 has been installed. I would test quite a while before I would jump to ANY conclusions.

2. SP1a for FSX SDK is here: http://www.fsinsider.com/downloads/Page ... pdate.aspx

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP ALL OF YOUR WORK BEFORE INSTALLING THIS UPDATE. THE UPDATE DESTROYS SDK SP1 AND REPLACES THE ENTIRE PACKAGE INCLUDING YOUR SAVED SETTINGS AND WORK.

Be sure to install FSX SP1 first, before installing SDK SP1a

3. Download and install the update posted with SP1: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

4. If you can not return the textures or files, uninstall FSX completely, reboot, install FSX, activate it, reboot and install the updates. Do not forget to defragment your hard drive after the update or install. Those using O&O Defrag should run the SPACE defrag, reboot, and then run the COMPLETE\NAME defrag and reboot again after the update is applied and any other addons you install at that time.

5. 3RD party scenery, aircraft or addons that do not change any default FSX files are safe to remain without uninstalling.

6. If you are using a hacked version of FSX... your finished. Either buy it or go without SP1

The update will NOT remove or change the FSX.cfg file. If you have done significant tweaking in that file I recommend you save the file somewhere safe and start fresh.

Keep in mind, this update will change many things, especially dual/quad core thread use and as such you may find the tweaks made are worse than starting clean and tweaking as needed. PTaylor and the scenery developer have both stated fiber frame time factor on dual core should be either default or reduced from default with this release.

Good luck to everyone. I will not be able to work with SP1 very much right away however I will try and get it installed this weekend.

First impressions:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.14GHz
1GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 (GS I believe)

I never had much of a problem running the game on moderately good settings. In my experience what MS said about the bump in FPS is true. I was getting about 20-25 FPS in a Learjet (behind the plane cam) around decently sized cities (in this case Phoenix). Now that I installed SP1 I'm getting about 30 FPS under those conditions and getting a satisfactory smooth flight. The game does load a bit quicker to start a flight as well, not by an amazing amount but enough to notice the difference. Once I saw that I was getting a nice FPS boost I turned up a couple graphics settings just a bit to see if it could handle it. I still got the 30 FPS but when my Learjet turned it wasn't as smooth as I like (its difficult to explain, it wasn't jittery in the normal sense as the screen would not jump). I'm definitely going to spend some time fine-tuning my graphics settings again. I really wish the "Level of detail radius" graphics slider came with more increments instead of just "small, medium, and large" as this one setting seems to make a bigger difference than I had thought and I would like to place my setting between two of the choices. Here's a bit of an oddity: when I am in the VC or normal cockpit of the aforementioned Learjet flight, the FPS counter varies wildly several times a second where as it doesn't do that nearly as much in the behind the plane view. The performance and FPS count is noticeably better in the VC than in the behind the plane view, the discrepancy between the two appears to be more pronounced than I remember it being pre-SP1. The FPS counter says I'm getting 40-60 FPS (on occasion it will go nuts and change between something like 18 to 80 FPS really quickly without any noticeable effect on the screen). Its nice and smooth but I'm not believing that those numbers are quite accurate or that they are truly jumping around that rapidly as I don't see that really occurring on the screen. So far, I'm certainly pleased with SP1.

Those are my early impressions, I may post more if I find something after more playing.

I got it installed

here's proof of dual core use!!

I left my FSX.cfg file as it was to see what would happen. I was easily able to raise the frame lock 2 frames and slightly raise the autogen trees and building values.

The 747 never flew so smooth but I am also seeing the same thing as lacrossefan. A defined boost in performance but now I get these strange micro-stutters. I have not toyed with the driver settings like Threaded Optimization. It almost looks like the type of stutter i use to get in games before I applied the dual core hoxfix and patches for Windows XP.

I think I am going try a clean FSX.cfg file and work with it for a spell. Perhaps the FFTF is now completely messed up because both cores are chugging along

I am still trying to figure out these new settings....

Lacrossefan:  Phil Taylor suggests that where fps exceed 40/50 turning vsync off improves performance.  He has a lot of suggestions in his three? part blog on SP1 including cfg tweaks.  Follow the links on FSInsider to his blog.

I am using replacement environment textures for fsX along with my OLD fsX.cfg. After installing fsX SP1 I noticed:
FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION= was upped from my usual .29 to .33.
SHADER_CACHE_PRIMED=1693428480 was added.
PAUSE_ON_LOST_FOCUS=1 was added

Anyway, after installing I boosted autogen slider from Dense to very dense (Autogen numbers are at 670\335 and scenery radius is at 4.5) then I maxed out water and over KSEA I got 15fps which is what it's locked at. Amazing. I boosted autogen and water it still runs great!

Here are some shots which I was playing the game at:
