I have a pretty good PC which I can run most of the latest games on all high settings. However when running FS x it goes bloody bonkers?! I was trying to take off with a Cessna at Gatwick Airport on Medium high settings and it was nearly like watching a slideshow. About 4-5 frames per sec while taking off. So I turned the settings to all minimal but still the frame rates were about 7-8 per sec!

This is my PC config. I don't think its that bad myself  :o

# Intel Pentium 4 517 Processor
# 2.93GHz, 533MHz FSB
# 1024MB DDR RAM
# 80GB Hard Disk Drive
# Multi-Format Dual Layer DVD RW Drive
# 512MB nVidia GeForce 7600GS Graphics
# Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Did I do something wrong while installing? I've turned off all background services even including firewall, anti-virus etc.

nope you did nothing wrong.....

WELCOME TO THE FABULOUS WORLD OF MICROSOFT FSX!!!!!
Where every computer in the world is unable to run it completely maxed out!
Get used to, lower settings, hours of tweaking, and, of course, AMAZINGLY too big file sizes!

Join the club! you are number 5,392,314 (approx.)

FSX is like that, even the most expensive pcs can be turned to shreds when using FSX.

It was purposely made soooo hard on pcs so that it will still be competitive in 3-5 years.

One thing is, are you flying over a city? If you are only getting 7-8 fps over a city I suggest you find a nice, big ocean or an empty desert to fly over!  ;D

Hours of tweaking... that's right. Get the SP1 (service pack 1) and install. Another gig of RAM. Good dual core processor, why not another gig of RAM? A bigger hard drive, and then some more tweaking. Wait a few years, buy newer hardware then (1-2 years from now) and do some more tweaking, get Windows Vista, another new processor, another gig of RAM, better video card, some more tweaks, and then you'll be able to play FSX maxed out :) Any more questions?

You just need to treat her right. There are replacement textures for autogen scenery which reduces the resolution by half, and file size by a quarter. Image quality is slightly deteriorated but it is worth the trade off. Also there are two things that I have found with my NVIDIA Go 7600. First, in the control panel force V-sync OFF, this improved my frames dramatically as it wasn't always waiting to sync with the refresh rate. Another one is the Thread Optimisation setting, it takes advantage of hyper threaded/multi core systems to improve processing speeds. I found that turning it OFF caused my frames to jump from 7 to 20 (capped) on my Core 2 Duo system. I don't know why it improves the performance, it just does. Also, I'm running only 1gb ram and using Windows Vista and I'm more or less happy with the way my FSX performs. Out of everything,  would recommend a CPU upgrade. It has been shown that FSX is highly dependant on CPU capacity, a fast dual core CPU will do you best.

Yeah i too strongly recommend getting another 1g RAM, FSX needs atleast 2gig to prevent it from looking like a slide-show.

Till DX10 is released we will all suffer, even us with DX10 compatible cards...
