Animating ac icon in map view w/ heading change

I don't know it this was discussed before but........

As we all must shurly know by now, the aircraft icon in map view no longer moves in relation to  heading changes.
Many have already found out that when you click "OK" it will change but it is only visible for a fraction of a second before the map view closes.

However,  I discovered that (after you change the heading and click OK) if you keep the mouse buttion depressed, and then, move you cursor off the OK button, the icon will cange to reflect the new heading and the map view widow will stay open. :)

erm, cough, I rarely use it now.  I got a freeware live view map that you can use whilst still in the cockpit.  It has lots of facilities built in, one of which is being able to key in any airport code and see the ILS frequencies as well as the map, without even leaving the cockpit.  No file menu and no blanking out the screen whilst it goes to another screen.  You just keep flying and look at the map as you go along, updated in real time.

Look for Talals Map View (I think its now Ver 3) on Avsim, absolutely brilliant!!!

Real-time, moving maps that show you exactly where you are while flying along , from inside the cockpit ?    ::)

Where's the navigation challenge to that ?

I don't even like to use the GPS  :P

Planning your flight, using VORs and NDBs to keep track of where you are and where you're going.. now THAT's fun (and educational)..  :)

Yours moves?

It's a bug in FSX that  the map  ac icon does not rotate as you change the heading as it does in FS9.
It will move it you drag it to a different location.

Brett, I can sympathise but that's a matter of preference.  However sitting in Melbourne Australia, exploring the North American continent and Europe, it is irritating to have everything come to a stop while you check the sim map.  Also the fun of FSX is that you can take off, then decide to go somewhere. Certainly not what you would do real world.  Also in the real world you have a chart on you knee or a GPS on the panel or in your pocket.

Reider, I can't get a search result for that reference in AVSIM. Talals xxx.  Could you kindly check it, I would like to try it

I tracked it down to Perfect Flight, v2.0, for FS2004.  I take it that it works ok in FSX?

Too true, folks do things there own way.   Some eat that cardboard shiite in a morning (muusli or something), doesn`t mean its necessarily the right way or we all should do so, good for you or not.   If folks are so against moving maps then maybe they should just skip this thread, afterall it was started about one in the first place.   I`ll go find it now....

Go to Avsim, file library, key in Talal in the search field and look for

 talal_s_map30-1.gif

Not the version 2.0 product though.....

File Description:
The ultimate gauge. The Map will show: Airports details (Runways ID's, length & ILS), VOR's and NDB's frequencies, Intersections and waypoints, Airspaces, Approaches and flight routes. You can toggle the view you require for your flight. Also you can zoom in/out to see the nearest airports, vor's and ndb's. The map will indicate A/C heading flightplan title and waypoints ID's. Version 3 includes more enhancements such as the ability to input the ICAO code or name of any airport and the map will show all the frequencies of that airport including ATIS, ILS, AND COM. In addition, the map will show the active runway designations, length and width. You can also input ICAO code of any VOR/NDB and the map will show their frequencies. There was a bug in v2.0, in which if you enter ( click on ENT )the ICAO code of an airport, you will lose the flight plan loaded. Now you can go back to the flight plan and with the NEXT/PREV buttons you have the choice of where to start your FP. The gauge will show Flight Plan Title, originating and destination airports, active waypoint, waypoint index and FP crusing altitude. I addition, the gauge will show various useful information, such as, Runway IDs, lenght, width and approach magnetic heading, Airport name, city, and type. NAV1/2 names, codes, distances and ETA's, ADF1/2 names and codes. Finally, the gaugee will show other information, such as, magvar, indicated airspeed, mach, ground velocity, ambient wind velocity and direction, bank angle , and a/c altitude ( radio height ). All the information above and much more on a single gauge window.

Ok.. no more sarcasm about moving-map navigation ( 'cause it's not navigation).

Also in the real world you have a chart on you knee

Absolutely have a chart on your knee. Go down to your local airport and pick a VFR sectional or two. Each will have hundreds of destinations and hundreds of hours of navigational challenges.

Humor me though, and just try it for a while...

Sit down like you would for real, with that sectional, and plan your flight. Write down the VOR/NDB data and all the headings and radials you'll need to follow (i.e. track the Appleton VOR 192 radial
