Lost It

Suddenly ATC stopped working.  The box comes up with the written text, select something but no sound.  Plenty of written say agains, but no sound and no action from that point.   Obviously the little man inside has judged that he can't hear me.

Repair run with the discs made no difference.

Another reinstall, ATC came up and worked.  But after the second time it stopped again.  Only installed the FSD Navajo and scenery.  Also MyTraffic X.  I thought that might be the problem so uninstalled it, no difference.

Where in the game is ATC, and what would need to be checked to make sure it was all functional?

And if anyone has struck this problem how was it fixed, please.

Err... I'm not sure, but usually, when you have your ATC box but you cannot speak, it's just that your radio (or general electric system) is switched OFF. Try hitting CTRL+E, to trigger a full automatic start, sometimes it's enough :)

What's your sound system? 2.1? 5.1?

I've lost ATC sound on rare occassion. If I close the ATC window and re-open it, the sound comes back.

Check your speaker config.

I lost ATC as well, blamed it on a broken ATC file, then on the sound drivers, then on codecs and then on DirectX.

Later on, I found out that I just had my audio drivers set to 5.1 mode, 'though I only have a 2.1 sound system.
Needless to say that FSX decided to let ATC talk on the nonexistant speakers.  ::)

I have my speakers set for stereo, but if I unstack them it as actually a 5.1 system, if you know what I mean. So I'll try that.

But if I go into SETTINGS-GENERAL,  I find that the pilot voice selection box is unpopulated.  None of the three options is there.

I have made sure everything has a 1 beside it in the atc section of the cfg.

But it does seem as if the voices are not being connected to ATC for some reason.

Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure that under windows Sound and Audio device settings that Voice / voice playback has your speakers selected. That determines where the audio will go to. I have mine go to a usb headset. It was somehting that was asked for and provided in FSX. Cause now you can have the ATC on headset.

Thanks, I think the speaker set up is correct.  The problem seems more fundamental than that -  there are no voices in the drop-down box to choose from.  It would seem that for some reason the box isn't being populated with the voices (you know the one with US English, Uk English etc).  It is blank.  Knowing me it will be something simple but I just can't pick it.  All other aircraft sounds work, including mission voices, speed call-outs and the like.

I also have a corrupted IE7 - it is easy to work around it by using Firefox, so as a precaution I am having Vista reinstalled.  And then doing a clean reinstall of FSX.  I think, I hope, that it goes back to my foolish use of registry mechanic on Vista when I learned afterwards that the warnings were out not to try any registry cleaning utlilities until Vista was properly understood.

In 24 hours I'll let you know.  Or if you don't hear anything my widow will post the details of my funeral.

I will die from credit card overload I think, or direct action from my wife when she sees how much I have spent!  However a Vista clean reinstall, and an FSX reinstall, have given me ATC back.  I had earlier done a clean reinstall of X so it sounds like I stuffed the registry when I stupidly ran a cleaner - it's too early in Vista for that sort of utility it would seem.

I am not sure whether it is just plain stupidity or a sense of adventure on my part.  I like to think it is the latter, but I reckon stupidity is the more accurate.

It was for me.

As I said...two speakers, but set up as a 5.1 system. :P
