I just reinstalled fsx for sp1 and I used to have pretty much every freeware addon installed. This time, I want to have just have a few (like fifteen or so) so I was wondering what freeware airplanes and scenery files are "must-haves".

"must-haves" is your own personal preference.

Well...Tell me which add-on aircraft (if you have any) is your favorite. I just want to know peoples opinions on which planes are really good.

Yes, I have add-on aircraft that I obtained from Simviation, but I really don't have a favorite as I like all of them. Download some, try them out and see what you think.

I have just installed pushback taxi speed control and it is a pretty handy little tool it allows you to turn during pushback and set an automatic taxi speed so all you have to do is steer and apply the brakes when needed its not ground breaking but i like it. Its in fsx misc add ons it also has an update to put an icon on the dash otherwise just use drop down menu.

The fact is that you'd better tell us what you need.
For example, some of us prefer liners, while other prefer small GA aircrafts, or even ultralights.

Also, very important is to tell if you prefer flying from a virtual cockpit or from a 2D panel.
If you prefer the 2D panel, you have quite an unlimited choice of models around here.
But if you are like me and you want to puke each time you see a 2D panel (yes, I really hate them), then your choice is MUCH MORE LIMITED, because there are very few freeware aircrafts around which have a nice VC, and even less with a clickable one.... but nevertheless, some little treasures can still be found, juste tell us what you are looking for and we may be able to give you some hints :)

Couldn't agree with you more. ;)

Sadly, we're still quite alone out there....but with a small add-on aircraft folder instead. ;D

Well, honnestly my addon aircraft is becoming big and bigger, slowly but surely.
Recently, I parsed almost all of the FS2004 props download section (my computer will not allow me to fly too fast on FSX), and I was pleased to discover a lot of little GA aircrafts with very nice virtual cockpits. The UTVA 75 being one of my obsolute favorites, just like the Howard 500, both of them working perfect and looking perfect in FSX.

I still have to test, for example, the An-24 RV I was mentionning in another thread, just like the Tu-114. Those have two of the best VCs around.

When you sim up (EDIT: "sum up", funny laspsus :) ) everything, you already come to quite a pleasant number of addons. Of course, this cannot be compared to a 2D panel-addict's number of addons, but anyway, I'm stil very pleased by what the community has to offer for FSX.

I like to put it this way: If it doesn't have a VC, you can still use it for AI. ;D

second (or third) one from botom! A load of fun to fly and easy to land! And it has helecopter like movement in the right config! Awesome plane!

Well thanks for the suggestions, I like planes with good VCs, but It seems I can't download anymore add-ons, because every time I do it gets some weird new error.

I've had to do a total reinstall about 5 times now, one to purge my gauges, effects, and simobjects folders,
again since it didn't work, then I defragged it,
then I reinstalled again after I realized the fsx folder in application data was still there,
and again after deleting said folder caused my logbook to stop recording flights,
even though it automatically made a new one. And now I'm going to reinstall again,
because my logbook still isn't recording flights!

And I know It would be easier to do a repair reinstall, but It seems to freeze halfway through when I repair.

When you deinstall, make sure that the main folder is gone, and delete as well the FSX folder in Documents and Settings\your user\Application data\Microsoft.

Concerning the gauges, the solution I use, which is a bit painfull now with FSX, is to place the gauges of a new plane directly into its "panel" folder instead of the gauges folder of FSX:
- the good thing is that every plane has its own gauges, I do not overwirte them, there is no conflict
- the bad thing is that I have to confirm EVERY SINGLE gauge, even if another plane was already using it and I confirmed it before for that plane, now I have to confirm it again... and that sucks.

Almost all add-ons come as a .zip file. You must first Extract the files before placing them into FSX. The way I do it is to create a folder on my desktop labeled "Sim". Then I save the .zip files to that folder. Once they have downloaded, right-click on the .zip file and select "Extract All". Once it has been extracted, 99% of all add-ons have a ReadMe.txt, ReadMe.doc, Instructions.txt, etc... Open those files with Notepad and follow the instructions.
