Dense fog at 8500 ft

It doesn't matter where or what plane I fly. As soon as I hit that 8500' altitude the terrain vanishes and turns into a peasoup fog. As I get close to 30,000' I begin to see some detail again,however murky. Anyone else have this issue.
I did install SP1 and it didn't fix it.

Yes,all default settings. Clear skies. I'm a novice and haven't tried any serious winds or weather yet.

its probably a graphical issue then. what are your pc specs?
