Climb into the 172.. take off and stay in the pattern. Do some touch and goes.. get used to finding the runway and orienting yourself (easiest flight plan I can think of).. fine tune your landings and then plan a flight to the nearest airport. Try to pick one where you can use a VOR if need be, to find it (save the GPS til you master VORs). practice entering and exiting the pattern there and get a few more landings in. Then see if you can find your way back to the original airport without any radio nav-aids.
Once you've mastered that... plan some longer, multi-leg flights to get comfortable getting around by VOR and NDB. THen when you're to up the challenge.. set the visibility to 2 miles and start navigating by instrument only (no GPS yet)... work on ILS and non-precision approaches. You'll love it when you wrestled that 172 100 miles to a strange airport and find your way to the runway in 2 mile visibility... It's quite an accomplishment.
