Ok. Im never buying any microsoft crap again. I've had FSX for wahile, and ive been playin it with two gigs. But I still thought it was slow, so I bought a 4-gig ram stick and put it in my PC. Now when I boot up fs, and start flying, its not different at all from the 2 gigs I had. It actually makes it worse! Like after a minute of gameplay the textures get worse on the planes and the fs world, then over time they get even worse. If you guys have any solutions to this, or the texture problem, please comment! Thanks if you guys help me out of this rut.

maybe its not your ram try upgrading your graphics card  ;)

Im not sure of its that problem. I've got an Nvidia GeForce 8800

what kind of motherboard are you running ......another thing that can slow the flight sim is the speed of your hard drive

Microsoft is aware of many issues that came with  this Game ,I recomend you to calm down(You are not alone in this Many of us have the same kind of issue) ,THE GOOD NEWS ARE: in the next 10 days (maybe sooner) MS will release a package a Service Pack 1 To fix many problem of FSX including yours (I assume)..Stay Tune here in our forum..

Just adding RAM doesn't always help... Most of the newer motherboards don't like it when you mix anything.

You said you got a 4gb stick. I've never see 4gb on one stick so I'll assume you've got 4gb total.

Now.. if that's two 1gb sticks, and one 2gb stick... THAT can be slower than just 2gb. If you're running 4gb; on some boards that HAS to be either four 1gb sticks... or two 2gb sticks.. and it HAS to be of the same manufacturer and the same speed.

Tell us what you have..

Also, you may want to go to the "Flight Simulator X FAQ's!" post. There are some great links there...one is for Nvidia tweaks that are very helpfull. I have 3gig of memory and a "high performance" Nvidia graphics card and I experienced great improvement in FSX by utilizing some of the suggested Nvidia Graphic Card tweaks / settings.

Yes

First of all Windows XP x32 and Vista x32 will not use more than 4gigs of memory, only the x64 versions will. Are you on the x64 version of Vista?

Second, ... the 3800+ processor is completely choked on both the 8800 card and FSX. I am afraid that CPU is waaaaay outmatched. X2 6000+ clocked up is the least I would run for 8800 and FSX and expect scenery with smooth. SP1 for FSX will be making that better. By how much is unclear but even so, the 3800+ is far too slow for the 8800 card not matter how well FSX is fixed.


You will have to accept lower scenery settings in order to smooth it out

That post shows the slider settings, driver settings and FSX.cfg file tweaks to start with. Carefully review the graphics sliders and check boxes shown and set it up like that, except:

Terrain @ 19m
Autogen slider to DENSE
Frame lock @ 20
Monitor to your resolution x32
Traffic 20 GA, 30 airline

Fiber frame time factor.. experiment.. no higher than .33 and try as low as .25 or anywhere in between

Texture bandwidth multipler to 320

Autogen trees set to 1400
Autogen buildings set to 700

Once you get it smoothed out, see if you can raise the autogen slider to Very Dense

You may also experiment with frame lock but I would say your limit will be 20... possibly 24 if you are very lucky

If you did any of the major texture or autogen hacks or tweaks... I think a complete reinstall of FSX is in order and don't use any of them, other than the autogen tree file tweak suggested in the settings post.

I would consider my system to be pretty good, but this game eats it alive, even at low settings. And at low settings, what's the point? I can run FS2004 with everything maxed out and it's pretty smooth flying. And it looks pretty good. So what's the point of upgrading to FSX at this point? I'm still asking myself that. Certainly not for the visuals, anyway.

There's an X2 6000+? I didn't know that. Unless you meant an X2 clocked to 6000+ - which would be what clock speed? Anyway I have an X2 4800+ which when I bought it was as good as it got, beside the FX series.

Sorry for ranting like this. I'm sure there's a million guys like me out there frustrated about the performance issues in FSX. I sure hope SP1 helps to fix some of this aggravation.

If you are looking for high visuals and alot of autogen... its either Intel E6800 (or better) with a 8850 -or- R600 .. or with AMD, the Barcelona coming out in late June, early July with either of those cards.

FSX, just like FS9, was designed for hardware that has yet to be released. FS9 was exactly the same. In 2003 no one could run FS9 at high settings, even on the best high end systems and it was not until 2005 that was possible.

The hardware FSX was desinged to run on full boar with DX10 wont be around until end of 2008, beginning of 2009


As for the X2 6000+

Hi, Another thing to check is your cpu, I had the same one (amd 64 tm x2) it would not run at the speed it should, I could only get 2.2 ghz out of it

Also.. ALL dual core Windows XP 3D Game users need to install the dual core processor driver, dual core optimizer and Microsoft Dual Core Hotfix:

Intel only needs the MS update, AMD must install it all

without it, stutters, lags and strange poor performance may be seen

That DOES NOT apply to Vista users, Only Windows XP

Ok guys, i've solved my problem. I followed the Nvidia thread tips and it works! FSX runs pretty smooth for me now because I turned the autogen to low. And what's the point of autogen anyway? If you're flying high, you can't even see it. But thanks for your help guys! Oh and Nick, yes I do have the X64 version.
