If you check out the FAQ sticky at the very front of this forum you will see a list of some of the things you can try.
Some other things you can do is to make sure nothing else is running in the background. Shutting down things like Anti Virus Programs or any other unneeded program will help.
How much system ram do you have the more system ram you have the better off you are. 8-)

i agree 256mb is not enough for FSX. unless you want to leave it at the lowest settings. You need at least a gig for medium- high settings, 1.5 to 2 gigs for higher settings...

What i do is turn off the autogen. that way you can get better resolution and FPS. with your comp, which isnt that bad except for the RAM, you might want to put the custom scenery on minimal.
at least you don't have an integrated chip. I have one GIG RAM, and a cruddy card...

Ok ok, let me see if i get this straight. except for the ram you think this computer isn't all that bad? I had the same computer from 2001 or 2 till 2006, and im telling ya, it sucked. It barely managed slideshowing BF1942 maxed out. now, i have a fairly new dell with 4 gigs, an Nvidia 7800 GTX 256 mb, and i am from time to time happy with my FSX performance. With everything maxed out (except for boats, cause they look wierd) i get a reasonable frame rate of around 20-27 FPS flying in the countryside or among the caribbean islands. of course, if i encounter a heavy storm or something like that, it drops to around 10 fps, and in the horrible city of new york the FPS is abysmal, even when i lower the settings to below medium.
So the best thing to do is to upgrade the entire computer or get a new one, or simply getting more ram and keep the settings at a minimum. I tried to get more RAM to my computer when i had the same as yours, but i couldn't find any that fit a year ago, but thay may simply be my noobishness when it comes to advanced computer stuff. So i think the best thing to do is to by a new one.
It isn't that expensive either. i have intel pentium D 830 3.4 ghz processor, 4 gigs RAM, nvidia 7800 GTX 256 mb, and it cost me nothing more than $1900. Which is cheap for Norway.
