I could be out in left field here but are you sure the video card and the driver you are using for it are VISTA compatible.

Yep, it is an NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT OC using the latest NVIDIA aproved driver for Vista 64.  But that was my first thought but I checked that out.

Try decresing all the quality settings of your card, to see if it works with basic settings.
I'm thinking about the same kind of problem than FS9 missing menu bar or missing aircraft 3D preview when the AA is set too high. Try disabling your AA and AF and stuff like that, to see if the situation improve

Ok tried every possible combination of disabling/enabling AA and AF both on the card itself and within FSX.  The only change was that forcing AF in just FSX made the situation worse.  Good thought though.
