Approaching w/ airport height/elev. concerns

Postby young7938 » Thu Mar 08, 2007 12:39 pm

how do you take into consideration of the airport height when you are trying to land only using your instruments. I use the ILS for approaching and landing. I landed at Chicago o'hare and I landed on the runway smoothly  like I was supposed to but I noticed that I was clipping some of the airports buidlings when I looked at the replay. I believe for runway 32R the height was 675'.

If your altimeter is set correctly, you won't crash during an ILS approach.

So get to know the barometric pressure at your destination airport (ATIS knows...), set it and land without scaring some nearby residents. ;D

I read that on FSX all you have to do while approaching (Approx. 20 miles out) press the key "b" to reset the altimeter. is this correct. i believe that it is a default key on the controls.

No. You usually reset (=29.92 baro) the altimeter when you're above 18000ft.

If you follow the ILS you shouldnt have a problem.  Thing is, you should use a chart to find the decision height.  If you cant see the airport, make a go around.
