FSX does NOT correctly use Dual cores.

Thats right. I just popped in my new Pentium D 805 and clocked it to 3.9Ghz I boot up FSX, crank up the settings, and notice that my frames have doubbled. So I think that both of my cores are being used. Wrong. The sim is still only useing one core. What it may be doing is shuffeling all the background stuff onto the second core, so everything runs more smooth.

Anyway this is what I found.

Cheers

there was a previous post on how to split FSX's processes inbetween both cores.

Here's a naive question. Isn't Vista supposed manage the 2-core deal ? Isn't that one of it's claims to fame ? From what I understand.. Vista (with a Vista upgrade to FSX) will unleash all this dual-core power ...

From a post I read a while ago from M$ the FSX that was origanally relased was made to run on WINDOWS XP and as such was not designed to run on either VISTA or a dual core processer. The post states that once VISTA and DX10 was relased that a patch would be relased to unlock everything.
Now mind you that does not mean that you can not use a dual core cpu but you will have to make the tweaks to make use of it. The minimun system requirements does not mention VISTA at all.
And from what I have read that a dual core cpu will be needed in order to get all of the bells and whistles from VISTA. 8-)

I can confirm a dual core Athelon 64 is not really screaming with XP Pro and FSX.

Ok, I'm normally good at computer stuff, but I have no idea what the whole deal is with the dual core thing.

We have an HP dual core, and all I want to know is: WHAT THE HECK DO I HAVE TO DO TO GET GOOD FRAMES?! (besides lowed settings) :P

P.S. you spealt "does"wrong ;)

VISTA may/will utlize dual core

Anyone got a link to this?  I know that if you bring up the task manager and right click the process, you can set the affinity for both CPU's.  Is this what you're talking about?

Vista vs XP in fsX performance. According to him Vista balanced the load?

Conq--  Hate to disagree, but if you drill down to all the refererences emacs makes in the thread you cite, it sounds to me like a wash until some new drivers and/or hotfixes come out later this year.  I don't see the  plus side of spending hours on installation and a learning curve with Vista just to get a quicker boot up for FSX and no benefit in textures or FPS.

Well, the only thing FSX needs regarding usage of dual-cores is a simple .bat file instructing it to use the second core primarily.

So FSX uses core #2 by 100 and, if required, takes resources from core #1 on which Windows and whatever is running.

Heretic-- Katrina beat me to it, but I'd like to echo:  Could you show us this .bat file?   :-/
