FSX I love it!!!

Hi everyone, Well I went and bought FSX. Must say that first impressions were pretty good untill I tried to actually fly. It took ages for things to load and the it was all shaky and jerky. Turned it off and went back to the smooth FS9 on the first night.

Then I found this site, WOW!! What a lot of information we have here... I spent most of the last 2 nights tweaking my computer and the game. I followed Nick N's thread about background services and turned off all the stuff that runs in the background, then the defrags etc etc....

Then went through all the game settings, added swivel pan to Virtual cockpit etc etc... This is stuff I had no clue about, but the information here made it an easy task.

I have a 3gig hyperthreading prosessor, 1 gig ram, ATI saphire 9600 card. After all the tweaks I pushed all the FSX settings up to ultra high and actually flew "fairly smoothly". I then started playing with graphics etc and ended up with most settings on high or ultra high. But I did turn off road traffic.
Well it runs FSX like a dream now.
The graphics are amazing, so good that I have to go and buy a bigger monitor to really immerse myself into the game. The Virtual cockpit makes you feel like you are actually in a plane. :)

I also have never used a glass cockpit before and it looked a bit confusing. But after reading the tutorial and playing..... I love it. Wow.

So thanks for the advise everyone, and to those that still have reservations about FSX, I would say just do it. You do need a decent machine, but my computer is now 4years old and after a few tweaks it runs FSX no problem at all now.

Cant wait to knock off and have a good play tonight.........

John

Hi, Thanks for saying G'Day. I am a private pilot... Still stuck with single engine but do have Var: prop and retract rating :) And my aerobatics rating 8-). But I dont get to fly much, and love the sim to keep my hand in...
I took a flight last night in Perth Western Australia where I live, and I was most impressed with the feel of the sim. Graphics are brilliant, but the weather is what sold me. We had pretty windy and gusty conditions and the Cessna 172 was flying like real life...... It was amazing the wind effect had on the plane... Just like real... And the 40knot headwind on landing made me fly the thing like I was really in a Cessna.

Now I want to hire a plane with a glass cockpit... they are cool....

Hey Alex, I will say that these days there does not seem to be much difference between real an Sim.

I love my flying, but because I can not get up much I also fly RC Helicopters and planes. But I can not get the hang of the Sims Helis yet haha... :-/

I like anything that fly's. ( even my 400 horsepower car flys lol)

I think I will enjoy my time here... I am the type of person that craves knowledge and information. Haleluja to the worlds forums.....

Well I guess I'm becoming a lot happier but poorer money wise With FSX. I just upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7300GS with 256mbs to a GeForce 8800GTS with 640mbs. Also upgaded to a 550watt power supply. Got it up to around 20fps on the high settings if i'm not over a really high detailed area. Then they drop off to around thirteen. I Guess I can live with that. I don't know what kind of a rig you would have to have to run settings ultra high. I'll say one thing though. Boy did my modelplane sim "RealFlight G3" frame rate and performance ever improve. More than doubled. I'm still playing with the settings so any tips to improve FSX are more than welcome. Here are my updated computer specs.

System Manufacturer: HP Pavilion 061

Hey Bob, I spent hours tweaking FSX and my computer. As per the Stickys in the forumns. I have realflight G3 also and that is as smooth as now.

Hehe, that's what I'm considering, too. :)

What kind of monitor do you have, btw?
If it's at least a 17" LCD then I'd suggest spend the money on Ram and/or a faster CPU. Then you can crank the settings up even more. :)

The Virtual cockpit makes you feel like you are actually in a plane. :)

Oh yeah!

I have a cheap LCD 15". Really is time for a 30" screen ;D. I have also got bitten by the power bug in the last 2 days and may upgrade my box too....

I flew last night in dense scenery and had a couple of stutters. Had to drop a couple of settings a notch. I did not notice a quality drop but.

I also want a proper yolk and rudder pedals. I only just noticed the slip ball works now and I have to coordinate my turns..

Well my bro's 19" CRT Flatscreen blew up, now he's got a 12 inch, 10 year old 12" IBM screen, capable of running two whole resolutions, 800x600 and 1024x728!!! It also using the old school way of changing resolutions, by taking 10 seconds and making tons of clicking sounds.

Hey Superpursuit! I'm James, one of the few Australians on Simv. Glad to see you like FSX and you're showing it! The people who DON'T like it have a small tendancy to be louder than those who DO like it.  ::) ;)
