Gauges...

Small problem..
A long while ago, I was screwing around with an aircraft, I noticed in the gauges folder (for fsx) there are cabnet files which contain XML files and images. I am wanting to know:
How in the world do gauge (.gau) files from fs9 translate to fsx??
It's so annoying...

Not sure what the problem is. XML gauges configured in CAB format were first introduced with FS2002. FS9 gauges in the older GAU format (including the FS9 defaults) will still work in FSX.
The latest default FSX gauges are in DLL format.

Before I just give it up, I want to make sure I'm doing this right.
Im just putting the gauges (.gau files) in the gauges folder among all the other files. When I start FSX and select my aircraft I get different boxes:
1 kind says "Do you want to run this program" with an "unknown publisher" and gauge name
Another kind says "The gauge for Flight Simulator was created or used before '98. It is not supported"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just give me a brief description on where I put the files and what actions I shoud take.

You not doing anything wrong. A lot of GAU files created for previous versions of FS are incompatible with FSX. Unfortunately you won't know which ones without trying them.
I try a lot of aircraft in FS9 & FSX & usually paste the gauges into the Panel folder of new aircraft to check them out. The ones that are OK can be transferred to the FSX\Gauges folder if you decide to keep the aircraft. Make a note of the file names of the "pre FS98" gauges so you can remove them. This should only happen with aircraft intended for earlier versions of FS. Aircraft/panels created specifically for FSX should obviously include compatible gauges whatever format they might be.
I second that, very good technique, afterwhile it's easier to uninstall an aircraft you don't like or that doesn't work.
Just an advise: drop those gauges in the panel folder exactely like you would drop them in the Gauges folder: respect the directory structure, do not extract .cab files etc...

This seems to work- GREAT

I'm gonna keep testing other panels to see if they work fine!

Hagar.
I'm not going into any arguement. But a lot of fs9 planes are giving trubles in a full fsx install.
I know you're running the demo, there they will work, so take it easy.
Problems i've got is with sound, textures and gauges (a lot of gauges).
Just to info you my freind.

The Demo is no different from the full version in this respect. Proper FS9 gauges will work fine in FSX. It's the 3rd party gauges created for earlier versions that are giving problems.

Just one question.
How do you know that?
Try this new aircraft for fs9.
Draken at flightsim.bookmark.se.
No sound in cockpit. No startup. No nothing.
Try starter gauges from fs9. They are just clicking.
I'm still talking about a full fsx.

It was confrmed on this forum by Bill Leaming who knows what he's talking about.

I'll try it if you wish but there doesn't seem much point if you don't believe a word I say.

The "new" aircraft for FS9 may still be using old style gauges in some cases. Without a detailed look at the model and gauges, it's not a simple "install and go".

Felix replied in his capacity as a freeware developer. I find his experience & input invaluable.
I remember trying that Draken for someone else. It's very complex & you need to read the comprehensive flight manual to get the best out of it. I'm not convinced that its fully compatible with FSX.

I just dowloaded, installed and tried it... Then installed the 777 autostart gauge. I couldn't even get it to show up on th 2-D panel... But when I hit "Ctrl+E", the gauge flickered visible for a second and the engine started.
I think the use of FS9 planes/gauges is looking to be a hit-n-miss thing, and the complexity of that Draken only worsens it. You can mess up your installation in a hurry..
I'm sticking to default, made-and tested-for-FSX.. and my own planes.. for now.
