Stearman no sound inFSX

FSX including FSX Steam version.

Stearman no sound inFSX

Postby nbrettoner » Sat Dec 30, 2006 8:45 pm

Hi,

1st post here. Just purchased FSX & have downloaded a few FSX & FS2004? aircraft.

Being unfamiliar with "how-to" install aircraft etc, I may well have made a couple of mistakes.

Successfully installed Hunter jet (both the red one & prototype), but no incon in aircraft selection listing.
Unsuccessfull with installing the Heron batch of aircraft. I have 'baggage' floating with the aircraft selection icon.
Sabre Jet gauges don't work. Just graphics/pics but no working gauges.
Stearman no sound!. The sound config file points to a Stearman sound file?, but I fear I don't have it?.

Any & all help & suggestions most welcome!.

Great sim this    :)

Hi Noel. That's quite a lot of bugs to sort out. I would have to check the files out myself to be any help so it's best if we concentrate on these separately. I take it that these are all posted in the FSX sections here at Simviation.

The Herons are easy. Press the L key to remove the baggage.
For icons to display on the selection menu you need a small screenshot in JPEG format named Thumbnail.jpg in the approriate texture folders of the aircraft. You can do this yourself.

PS. I will need page numbers or links to the pages the FS2004 aircraft are posted on.

Hi Hagar,

Thanks for the tip concerning the Heron.

I've deduced that I don't seem to have the default Cessna C182, so hence the aliasing to that sound file
doesn't work.

Yes all my searches have been on the "Simviation" website so far.

I have the FSX Deluxe version.

Can you tell me please, how/where can I get hold of that elusive Cessna C182 default aircraft; with it's original soundfile!!???.
So far I've downloaded three C182 versions & they all point to this elusive 'missing' default C182!.

I only have the FSX Demo so I'm not certain which aircraft are included with the Deluxe or Standard full versions of FSX. If FSX doesn't have a default C182 you can create one yourself for aliasing purposes.
Either paste a copy of the FS9 default c182 folder into FSX\SimObjects\airplanes*
OR
create a new folder in FSX\SimObjects\airplanes, rename it c182 & paste a suitable sound folder into it.
You could also rename the main folder of one of the three you mentioned to c182. (Make sure it has its own sound files & is not aliased itself.)

*If you use the first method & don't want to use the aircraft in FSX delete everything except the Panel & Sound folders.

PS. If you want me to check the Stearman & Hunter I need to know which ones & the exact pages these files are posted on.

Welcome to 2007 Hagar!.

I have these two Stearman:-

FS2004 Vintage page 73 = Navy N2S-1 Stearman Kaydet

FS2000 Vintage page 7 = FS2000 Stearman PT-13

....There's also two others (at least):-
FS2000 Vintage page 28 = FS2002 Stearman Dingo IV
FS2004 Vintage page 8 = Stearman Kaydet Mexican Air Force

Not sure where I got the two Hawker Hunters from.
Just did a search & there's several references to several repaints etc.
I'll look at it later & get back to you.
It's a bit late now & I'm really tired.

cheers & thank you for helping me with this Hagar,

And for the sound aliasing problem because of the missing Cessna 182, why don't you change the alias to make it point to the FSX default 172 instead ?

That is one way round it of course but a lot of 3rd party FS9 aircraft have their sound aliased to the default c182. It would save a lot of time & trouble to create a dummy c182 folder.

I found a full list of aircraft in both versions of FSX HERE
There is no default C182 in either version.

Right. I would forget the FS2000 versions as they will be incompatible with FSX. Try the Dave Eckert original here. http://www.simviation.com/fs2004vintage31.htm

This includes the Stearman_PT-13A that your version is aliased to. Please be careful as it's an auto-install. Direct the install path to a Temp folder & install the aircraft manually. This is most important as installing it direct to FSX could mess it up. I'm not sure if the included scenery will work in FSX.

Happy New Year. It's still New Year's Eve where I am. :)

:)

Hi Hagar & Daube,

Currently 10:49am 1st Jan 2007 here in Tauranga New Zealand.
I'm two & a half hour's drive south-east of Auckland (about 200km), in the beautiful Bay of Plenty region.
The harbour here has one of the highest wharfage through-puts in NZ, & at the entrance (to our harbour)
is the internationally-renowned Mount Maunganui (pronounced "mong-gan-noo-ee").
Cruise ships call in here on their voyages.

Thanks guys for your valued input.
On the 'other' Stearman I tried changing the alias to a FSX Cessna C208B, but either I got it wrong, or for some reason other than the alias, the sound doesn't work (on the Stearman in FSX).
I copy/saved the original sound text file, renamed the original "Old...", & edited new one to point to the FSX C208B, & named the text file as the origional. But that didn't work. Probably me getting the path wrong..

I'll download the C182, for which I say a great big thank you!! for the link!      :)
Yes I'll be careful with the install, & make sure I follow your instructions.

Even 'though I've not yet even set up my signature, I'm feeling so much 'at home' here,I'm looking for the coffee machine!!. ::)
And that's only after being welcomed by just two of you.

Have a great New year's Day guys. It's really nice to 'be here'. :)

cheers,

Either that or the 208B doesn't have its own sound files. The FS9 C208B sound is aliased to the C208.

I think you mean Stearman. It's a nice package with several different variations* & its own sound. You can almost smell the oil. :)

*You must install the one named Stearman_PT-13A as the others are aliased to it.

Glad to help but without the full version of FSX I'm limited to basic things like this.

Not sure how the 'quote' on the forums work, so this may look a little strange....
quote=[Either that or the 208B doesn't have its own sound files. The FS9 C208B sound is aliased to the C208.]

The C208B has two sound folders; a 'soundai' & just 'sound'.
I copied both of them over at one stage, but to no avail.

I read your reply too quickly, & thought the link was for the original C182, sorry.
Your link to the Stearman (with it's own smelly sound will be awesome!).   :)

quote=[*You must install the one named Stearman_PT-13A as the others are aliased to it.

Will do, with much thanks. It's downloading right now.

quote=[Glad to help but without the full version of FSX I'm limited to basic things like this.]

Your expertise & knowledge of FS offsets the limitations you speak of.
However I will bear in mind that you can't see this scary monster-thingy lurking in my computer; referred to as FSX!!. But you have it's father, grandfather too? (FS2004/FS2002)

Hi,

I have the package downloaded & 'unpacked' into a temp folder, but am hesitant to
continue until I have some more advice please.

Not having yet found a 'code of conduct' for the forums, I apologise in advance for possibly being naughty.

Here's a screengrab of the unpacked stuff.
I know where to put the aircraft one.
But not sure about the rest.
And the gauge zip file, where to?.

No problem posting the links to images on other sites. To install the aircraft paste the 6 Stearman_xxxx folders into FSX\SimObjects\airplanes. The contents of the Gauges folder (one gauge named daviator_stear.cab) to FSX\Gauges. (Don't extract it.)
I haven't tried the effects but they shouldn't do any harm in the FSX\Effects folder. Good luck. ;)

PS. As a general rule don't overwrite default files.

Thanks Hagar,

Day one of the new year, & I've learnt something new already!.
Not bad for an old dog & trick-learning eh?...... ;)

This 'paste' is just a test; another 'learning experience'

I'll do as you suggest, & try to keep in mind not to overwrite original files.

:)

Hi all,

Thank you Hagar & daube.

I've just been flying from Tocumwal to Wagga Wagga (NSW Australia) in the Stearman,
complete with gallons of nice juicy oily sounds.
:)

Unfortunately I instantly lost all visibility, instrumentation & forward motion. In fact even the dash disappeared!

ahem.

There was a local thunderstorm here, & my computer reset.

:-X

sigh.

I installed the other bits too Hagar, but as yet I've not copied over the thumbnail pics in the parent folder of the download.
Could you please just run me through how to get the selection 'icon-thumbnail' pics to where they need to be?.
So the aircraft come up with a picture instead of a "?" in the aircraft selection window.

Many thanks,

And the Stearman at Classic Flyers (here in Tauranga NZ) sounds just louder & perhaps not as sweet!.
