I created a folder in FSX\SimObjects called "FS9Aircraft. In the FSX.cfg, I added the SimObjectPath.6=Simobject\FS9Aircraft. How come I don't see the aircraft when I copy it to the FSX SimObject\FS9Aircraft folder? Am I missing a statement? It works when I copy it to the SimObject\Airplane.

Check the actual name of the folder against your .cfg entry.
It's SimObjects (with an 's')...
You have:
SimObjectPath.6=Simobject\FS9Aircraft

Did that but still no joy. Any other steps I may have missed?

If you're certain that path is correct the problem could be that the aircraft you're trying to install have aliased panels. The aircraft that panels are aliased to must be installed to the same directory or your new ones won't be listed on the selection menu. If they work in the SimObjects\airplanes folder I would leave them there. It's not worth worrying about. IMHO
PS. Double-check that CFG entry once again as it's so easy to make mistakes. If your new FS9Aircraft directory is in the FSX\SimObjects folder it should be
SimObjectPaths.6=Simobjects\FS9Aircraft
I suggest it's much easier to make it like FS9 & create a new folder named Aircraft in the FSX root directory. The CFG entry for your new Aircraft folder would then be
SimObjectPaths.6=Aircraft
