Hi all!
I am having trouble converting ground textures in fsx.

Replacement Ground Autogen Textures:

This will convert all the ground textures from 1024

ACES have specifically recommended that this 'tweak' should NOT be done. The bat file converts everything in the folder and all of the files that have alpha channels will lose them. The result will be a SIGNIFICANT degradation of the program.

A very large number of people have also reported that this leaves the autogen trees inverted and because the textures also have alpha channels, they will have black squares or triangles around them.

I have investigated this and found EXACTLY the above. I strongly recommend that you DO NOT touch this 'tweak' with a barge pole. If you delete your original files you will end up having to do a complete reinstall.

Rollerball that is because they do not complete the change fully.

You basically change DXT5 to BMP files then change the BMP files to DXT1 (which still retains the alpha channel I believe)

DXT1 files are not as big as DXT5 ones. The tweek worked perfect for me. If you do not convert the BMP's back to DXT1 this is when you get upside down trees etc etc. My trees are perfectly up the right way  ;D  I would think there is a file no the net you can just download with replacement textures by now though so you dont have to do the conversion yoursef.

Tweeking is always a risk, unfortunately almost all of us having to tweek FSX to get it playable and pretty at the same time at the moment. Just ALWAYS remember to back up any files you may be changing. The worst thing you can do is not do this and screw your sim up.

Hi Gix, I can only repeat what Phil Taylor of ACES said. They have been assessing all of the tweaks that people have been proposing and he specifically said that they do not recommend doing this one because of the severe degradation that would result. His words, not mine  ???

Yeah I can see what he is saying 100% You are bound to loose some quality/detail if you reduce the size of the files.

The trouble is there are few of us at the moment who can actually utilise the autogen fully with our current PC setups. I have changed the textures knowing that they have lost some quality however for me that minute trade off (I really dont study the trees just recognise they are there) off quality over performance is worth it.

I will say that I 'haven't' altered my ground texture files as like you said Rollerball they would loose quality and I didnt really want to do that on the ground ones. But Trees and Clouds I did.

I'm saving up monthly now so I can build myself a new system next year, probably late spring / early summer so I will be able to just install the sim and fly it without any of these texture tweeks etc. Until then it is a compromise for me  :(
