Some Amazing Discoveries!

Postby RollerBall » Wed Aug 16, 2006 7:29 am

I have several versions of my Kai Tak scenery and one of them which I haven't published has been made using ScenGenX, my scenery design program of choice that uses the BglComp SDK. ScenGenX allows you to place SCASM type API scenery macros ie ones made using programs like EOD rather than GMax. I decided to have a look at it in my 'world version' of FSX and I'm amazed.

Don't worry about the black terrain surfaces - I can't get ground textures to show and some buildings and objects like cranes don't have textures because they use default library textures that aren't present. The point is that all of my custom macros work in FSX which we were originally told WOULD NOT be the case!!!! So there's still hope for folks like me who haven't had the chance to get round to learning GMax.

Also note in the next shot how the glass transparency in the fire station tower still works perfectly, and how the default mule that I originally used (sorry, you won't have seen the original...) has been replaced automatically by the new FSX library model.

Image

This library model replacement thing made me think. In this version of the scenery I've got 2 cargo ships moored up next to the factory so I went down to have a look. PREPARE TO BE AMAZED.......

Not only had the models been replaced with the lovely new FSX ones BUT THE BIRDS WERE THERE FLYING OVER THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boy, to say scenery designers are going to have a field day with this new version is a total understatement. But what's amazing is how it seems to be backward compatible to SCASM scenery objects.

BTW In case you're interested, all of my Kai Tak apron lights worked at night as well! And my original scenery made using FSSC took ages to load and didn't run properly. although the custom objects still looked pretty good.

Sweet. ;D Does the scenery library thing work the same as FS9 or do you have to do it manually via the scenery.cfg?

Scenery library is better than FS2004 - like FS2002. Don't have to restart after activating a scenery.

Looks like Rollerball has become Microsoft's unofficial guinea pig. ;D

I love the shots and I am also impressed by the backwards compatibility. All we need now is a better understanding of how XML is read by FSX. ;)

:)

Thanks fellas.

Just found something very strange. Won't go into detal, but I just placed a FSX library object blocking the road next to St Juliana airport. The moving vehicles didn't go straight through - they went up the side, over the top and down the other side and continued their journey.

They are a brand new form of moving object!

Ok...As you can see here's the new supertanker, untextured of course (the birds.....the birds...)

The pics show a car running over the deck and it rejoining the road. You have to believe me that it went up the other side the same  ???

Funny thing was the same happened with another object that was also an untextured ship - but when I placed a textured library building in the way, the vehicles went straight through. Maybe it's something to do with crash detection??

So, let me get this straight, Were the birds in your scenery or did FSX include them?

Hmm... it looks to me as if the cars respond differently to scenery objects as opposed to AI-based objects. Hmm... am I wrong?

What all my faffing around has shown is that the birds come with ship objects automatically. Up above I showed how my FS2004 Kai Tak scenery 'works' in FSX and when it converted a library cargo ship in the scenery from FS9 to FSX it automatically added the birds as well.

??? Search me...all I know is the 'AI' vehicles because it included large trucks as well responded to the presence of certain types of objects which were placed in their path. Lots more to find out....whether this will all be covered in some kind of SDK I dunno
