Aircraft Icing

Postby Skligmund » Sun Aug 13, 2006 10:04 pm

You know, living in Alaska, one realizes how common icing can be. I almost died in a Brittain-Norman Islander when I was 4 or 5 due to icing (we landed at full power).

Since I haven't read anywhere that shows or mentions icing conditions, I assume that it is not in FSX. Is this something that only I would like to see? Perhaps I should post in 'add-ons wanted' to see if this can be done? One would think it would have been a part of FS by 2004, but still not?

The Samdim Tu-114 has an icing effect. I don't remember if it actually effects performance.

FS has simulated the effects of "icing" since FS2k, but has never supported "visible ice."

The effect of icing is increased weight of the aircraft... However, FS has never simulated DE-ICE. It only simulates ANTI-ICE, meaning that once your a/c is "iced up," the only way to get rid of the ice is to unload the aircraft and load it again.

To prevent icing, one would turn ON the anti-ice system... ;)

Hmmm, that's too bad, since most planes I fly on have de-ice equipment (de-ice boots, which I have installed probably 10 boots in my short career). I guess the Cessna 310 has alcohol anti-ice, but I've never flown on those. At that point, one must realize that the alcohol tank only hold so much, and will run out on long flights (which is probably also not correctly portrayed), so is not a viable option for long flight into known icing conditions.

Well, I guess that since FS is so lower 48 based/thought up, many common Alaska issues will not be dealt with. Example: dog legged runways, animals on the runway, bird strikes, snow/icing, slippery surfaces in the winter, the actual amount of air traffic (a lot) ect. ect.

My two biggest things are the elevation change dog legged runways (on a hill with a corner) and icing. But I digress, I know most people don't either think of this or don't care about it. Remember, according to some people, Alaska isn't on the same continent as the rest of the states (hence the phrase "Continental United States" which we supposedly do not apply), or are not of the country even. If you don't believe me, try to ship something here.

;D

You'll notice the aircraft on my avatar has de-ice boots. I might also add that it does not have a switch on it that has the words anti-ice, so I guess that plane is no good into known icing either in FS.  :P

X-Plane simulated de-icing. There was a bug with one version where the ice would build up and increase the weight of the aircraft to infinite values. :D

I had a scenery for FS2002 with a dog leg runway. It didn't use the default runways. The designer used a custom dirt texture and a flatten area to create it but it worked just fine anyway. I'll have to look that up and see if it still works in FS2004. Even if it doesn't there's an easy fix. It's only a matter of transparencies.

That would be neat, let me know what you learn.

Where was the scenery located?

It would be cool to use TKS on winter flying in FS

I downloaded it for a BFU job so it's somewhere in Alaska (like that narrows it down much  ;D)  Might be worth dropping  in on the BFU forum over at AVSIM and asking about it. I'm sure someone will remember.
