The letter "X" used by M$ is actually a Roman Numeral that means "10". Thus, in standard numbers, it would mean "FS10" just as we call FS2004 "FS9".

Here is a list of all Roman Numerals:

I = 1
II = 2
III = 3
IV = 4
V = 5
VI = 6
VII = 7
IIX = 8
IX = 9
X = 10
XX = 20
XXX = 30
XL = 40
L = 50
LX = 60
LXX = 70
XXC = 80
XC = 90
C = 100
D = 500
M = 1,000

Knowing the numerals is the easy part. It's trying to understand their sequence that becomes the hard part. ;D

I actually find knowing the numerals the hard part!

V = 5
I = 1
V - I = IV = 4
V + 1 = VI = 6.

That's how I know it!

Oh, and I thought 8 was VIII? Unless theres an 'American-Roman' version :P

X because there already is a product on the market with a similar title.

X because it looks like X-Plane.

Oh musn't forget: X because it is their tenth attempt.

Seriously though, it could be too early to judge if FSX was created entirely out of fresh ideas rather than an immitation of something else. We shall have to wait and see.

Looking at that terrain and scenery detail, I think I had better get upgraded.

Regards all

I think the reason they used X is because it is "trendy". Max-X, X-Play, X-Games, ect. For some reason people will find Flight Sim X more appealing than Flight Sim 2006 or Flight Sim 10.

Did it also occur to anyone that maybe they havnt thought of a name yet?  ???
Take for example the A380, or, before it was names the A3XX. Why would they suddenly burst into roman numerals when they have no reason to, and also all their other products are in normal digits?

Roman numbers are well known by a lot of people. Besides, as someone else mentioned before, the numeral X seems to boost sales on certain products and TV shows [like X-Men, X-Games, etc]. Look at the XBOX 360. They didn't want to call it XBOX 2 because a title like PS3 makes the name XBOX 2 sound obsolete.

Lol. There are some grey areas though. I've seen "4" written as both "IV" and "IIII". 18 (XVIII) and 19 (XIX) always seem to get people, as I've seen  (inaccurately) both "XIIX" and "IXX"

Basically it is pretty simple when dealing with numbers up to 100. You just have to remember that it is simplified in a confusing sense. Four is IV, which is easier than writing IIII, and also, if you look at it, look at what you are seeing and say the values of the numerals out loud, so IV would be, "One before Five". Which pretty obviously means Four. Same goes for the larger values of numerals, such as X (10) and L (50) All you need to do is remember that it is made out so you dont have to write a million numerals for the number 99. instead it is simply, IC. "One before A hundred".

Alright, thats my sermon for the day.

As for the "X" factor, I am pretty sure that they arent trying to think of a name. Because if that was the case, they would most likely call it Flight Simulator 2006 "X". X is a somewhat mysterious letter in itself as well. It is one of those things that just draws your attention when it is by itself. "Flight Simulator X" is a lot more eye-catching than "Flight Simulator 10" or "Flight Simulator 2006". The X has that kind of subliminal meaning behind it, such as that it is called something different than the previous Flightsims, therefore you assume that there must be something different about it, it must be so much better that it no longer needs a year attached to it, or a catchy title. Plus, it is number 10, and numeral X, as stated many times. So there is significant reasoning that it is very much the advertising title for Microsoft.

Thats my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Well you have just agreed with one point, the X does make something sell better, but saying this, and then saying that they tied it in with roman numerals makes no sense. If you have a long running line of products, as Microsoft does withit Flightsim, that are all 'numbered' in one way, you wouldnt change that. eg. the Rocky show, they wouldnt have gone, Rocky I, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky 4. Would they now?

I have just noticed in your post, why on earth would it be called 10 men, or 10 games? Its not the NUMERAL, its the letter.
