Lap Top computer for FSX

Postby Gringo6 » Fri Dec 01, 2017 2:27 pm

Do many people use a lap top for FSX ?

I need to replace my Desk Top with a new one and am considering
one of these gaming laptops instead of a new desk top and want to
know if others are using a lap top and are satisfied with it.

Please let me know you have done this.

I have a Asus that works fairly well. Of course any "gaming" laptop should handle FSX well enough.

My specs:

Win10

Pross: IntelCore i3-a5010U CPU @ 2.10 GHz

RAM: 6 GB

System Type 64 bit, X64 bassed processor

As you can see, it's no great shakes, but it works with 20 fps with a lot of the "sliders" (scenery, Traffic, etc...) set to mid-way.

I even got it on the cheap at Best Buy (Discounted display model).

I would imagine that a Laptop Computer to match the Intel i-7, etc, the specification of my giant Tower Gaming Computer (which cost me £600 new) would cost an arm and a leg!

One of my Sons has a high spec Gaming? Laptop Computer and it cost him well over £1,000!

"Laptops" always seem very expensive to me, compared to Desktop Computers!

...and maybe difficult/impossible to upgrade?

The one big disadvantage of any laptop is the fact that it is a laptop and upgrading them can be a difficult task. My biggest concern with a gaming laptop is the heat that is created from them.
Heat is the one killer of any systems laptop or desk top. By far a desk top is better ventilated than any laptop
Here is a link of 1 such laptop https://www.officedepot.com/cart/updateRouter.do
and this is a link to a gaming desktop https://www.bestbuy.com/site/ibuypower- ... Id=6032004
Mind you both of these are on sale at this time
If it was me I would go with the desktop It is a little cheaper and is a whole lot easier to upgrade than any laptop is. But that is my preference

MSI wave worked best for me during my 20 years with Flight Sim.
This is my latest since 6 months. Works perfect.

Also running an ASUS G series with 17" screen, pain to haul around, but made it work with a Pelican hardcase for my overseas trips. I can run FSX and DCS, both workable with sliders lowered, but I'm just about out of hd space and the GPU is old (GTX460M). I don't play many shooters, but ARMA ran fine on it, again with settings adjusted. Currently shopping for either an updated ASUS/other brand, or just build a desktop on the cheap now that I'm not away from home as much. Don't watch too many youtube reviews, could cloud judgement! Looking to transition to P3D.

I run a Dell D610, I have had it since 2010. Unfortunately it has already been upgraded to the max and will not be sufficient much longer. I see all these pictures and wish i could fly with those settings but performance is not good enought to do so. I fly with settings turned down low it takes away from the experience.

Hi all,

I've used a laptop for the past 8 years, the wife bought me that because I was shut away upstairs and not with her.
Now based on it being that old, the frame rates were very low but it could run Quake, 2 3 and quake 4 fine.

For the past 5 months the wife had been 'awkward' every time I was looking at gaming laptops, at Christmas I found out why,
my lovely wife who has always supported my flying, real full size and radio control and my full size sim adventure had bought me a
Dell 15 Inspiron, it's the I7 7th gen 7700HQ version with 1050 graphics set as the main graphics card, 8gb ram, 128ssd +1TB for the main storage,
running windows 10 64 bit.
Now the problems with my addons and win 10 had been solved, plus getting some help from just flight to get my addons for fs9 running as well, my FSX
with my demanding 737 addon runs at a minimum 70 fps and upto 170fps.
Ai ship and traffic is turned down but the quality of everything else is set to very high.
The laptop cost more than £200 more than what I was considering so I have a good smooth system, with regards the temperature, I get very little more than the
ambient temp of the room with the fan boosting every 15mins or so but for maybe 5 secs at a time.

One bonus that surprised was the in game recorder that works superb, not the recorder of the games but a recorder built into the system.
No more fraps etc :)

regards

Steve

I've run an HP Pavilion dv6, Intel I7, with Win 8.1, 1 Tb HD, and 8 Gb RAM. This computer is nearly 4 years old and runs FSX very well after fooling with settings and software forever. However to really enjoy using a laptop consider connecting it to a 42" HDTV via an HDMI cable. Can't recommend that high enough.

Jim
