You need to check your system event logs. There is where you will find out what exactly caused this problem
In Windows 10 you will find this under Administrative tools
If you have installed the Creator update for windows you might not be able to find the control panel This update is a major update and your system will restart a couple of times.
I have installed this update and Windows 10 has changed uninstall works differently now and I no longer see a control panel when I right click the Window in the left hand corner
but just search for event viewer and look for the errors that will be there 8-)

ha...i had net framework 4, so i didn't think i had to download 2.....but i went and installed 2, with service pack, and it worked....got my vancouver + :)
on the other subject ...my friend at the computer store wrote this for me...for you....

The error is caused by the Microsoft Flight Simulator Acceleration Expansion wanting to activate, but failing to do so properly. Microsoft actually has a specific set of instructions for resolving this issue, however their instructions do not fix the problem in Windows 10.

There’s also another set of instructions floating around the Flight Sim community that appears to have worked for others in the past (Using earlier versions of Windows). It has to do with the Upperfilters Registry key for the Disk Drives. It seems for some reason MS Flight Simulator likes this entry to read “PartMgr”, and if it does not it can cause problems with activating certain older Microsoft games. In Windows 10 this entry is “partmgr”, and if you change it Windows will no longer boot. So sadly we can’t change it, sneak in in safe mode, activate the software, and then change it back. So far the only solution I can think of is doing a fresh install of Windows 7, installing and activating FSX, activating it, and then upgrading to Windows 10.

anyways, i just leave the error notice and click on no...and all seems to be working.....what's an extra click :):)

The last time I had to reinstall FSX Gold edition Acceleration would not let me activate it. Than it would deactivate FSX drove me nuts as I could not figure out why it would not activate. So I wound up not installing Acceleration and just downloaded the service packs. I never figured out why Acceleration would not install correctly and allow me to activate it. :?:
As of this post I do not have Acceleration installed
The purpose of Acceleration was to give you the service packs a few extra aircraft and some other minor things. But as long as you install the service packs you do not need acceleration at all.
The crazy thing is that I recently noticed the last time I installed FSX it set the frame rate to unlimited and with all the sliders maxed out I was seeing anywhere from 65 to 85 frames per sec. I later locked the frame rates at 75 and have no problems.
I just recently installed AS2016 from HiFi This is the latest version of Active SKY and it is great. I only paid $15.00 for it but this is an update to Active Sky Next not a full version.
But talk about a difference you really feel the turbulence in storms now. The clouds look awesome and i do not have Active Sky Cloud Art installed. I now see the clouds as if I was in the real world. It is awesome 8-)

Too many people have had too much luck with FSX: SE.

I think that you're going to have to have someone who knows computers well take a look at it.

yea...i have a computer fellow here who is pretty good, although fsx is a more complicated animal to deal with...he's trying.....guess i should have given steam another chance instead of getting new discs from microsoft....but we'll see what he comes up with......thanks for people's considerations here.....windows 10 may be the problem, but we'll see....

I'm a bit late to the party but I do not think FSX Steam made anything to your computer.
Probably you had some hardware failure.
Also, I'm sorry you had to waste your time and energy with FSX on disk. If FSX Steam didn't work, there was no chance the original FSX would work any better.

What is your current hardware, by the way ?

oh....cpu i7-7700k.....nvidia gtx 1060....16 gig corsair ram ddr4.....msi z-270-m5 2-ssd drives 250+500 ish
....the fellow at the computer store installed win. 7 on my smaller drive and kept win.10 on the larger, and installed fsx in windows 7....and so far it seems to work, but haven't got into it yet.....ha...we shall see...shan't we :D

Installing Win7 was a mistake. That OS is quite useless nowadays, Win10 64 bits is the way to go.
Your hardware is very good. I'd say "medium to high class" by today's standards.
The poor performance you're getting from it are obviously due to either:
- hardware problem (something might be broken, it happen to me with a video card in the past)
- drivers problem (you had to reinstall all from scratch, so you might have to update a few drivers, for motherboard, chipset, video card etc...)

2 FPS with such hardware is definitely wrong, and Win10 is not the reason. FSX Steam isn't either.

thanks daube......well ...i got win.10 on 500g ssd.....and win7 on 250g ssd...which is totally dedicated to fsx.....and, although problems will likely pop up :), it seems to be working ok......if, in the future i get more serious, and want a better sim, i could install it in win. 10......seemed to be a good idea anyways :)
