Morning Mist on Water

As the title is there such a thing in FSX or as an add-on. I like to stooge around the PNW and it's many water features and it would be nice to see some mist for those early morning take-offs.

If you're talking about the fine mist hanging over a lake at the break of down, I've seen it many times when I'd backpack in the mountains.

But I think that that kind of lake mist is too shallow to be seen in FSX/P3d.

If you're talking about a light mist at dawn, I get a quite a bit of that. One of the things that make flying in a sim so relaxing.

Like this in Canada. BTW - there is a lake in the background. :D

Or this in Australia.

Or this in the Pacific.

That's what I thought.

Unfortunately there at least several problems.

1 - I think that the thickness of the mist is too thin to register in FSX, or even in Prepar3d which deals with thin cloud/fog better than FSX does.
2 - To be able to see that type of lake mist, you'd have to actually be on the water or near water level.
3 - The Fog/haze/mist in my picture is related to real-time weather from nearby weather stations. Lake mist may not be reported unless you have a seaplane landing area.

That's not to say it can't be done.

First, someone would have to make the lake mist effect. Next, that effect would, probably, have to be made user selectable under the "Weather" menu.

Now that I think about it, I believe that you can input how high (low) the bottom layer of the cloud level will be, and then how high you want the top cloud level to be.

Then you get back to how the different flight sims make the "cloud" look, with Prepar3d dong the better job. I can try this week end, but thin clouds look better while you're in the sim than they do in a picture. Still, I'll try.

Many thanks for your input on this Old AirMail, I though it would be a tall order. I've been looking at REX on my system but can't see anything there that could be used.

Rich, It was even easier than I thought.... IF you want it in one location.

Go to World - Weather - User defined weather - Advanced Weather and play around with cloud heights & types. There are other settings that might help too.

This is in Prepared, and as I said they have volumetric clouds+. Still, you can probably get something close to what you want. :D

The height of the clouds should be lower for what you want though.

Closer, anyway. :D

Good luck, and show us some pictures however it works out. :D

BTW - Rex and other programs may have good to great looking clouds, but you DO NOT want real-time weather.

Personally, I have REX Essential Plus Overdrive but only use it for the textures. For real-time weather I use OpusFSI, although the newest iteration of Active Sky Next looks exceptional.

One last BTW - Take off from runway 36 at KTVL for a good place to start.

That is really close to what I was after, going to experiment with REX textures and cloud level. I never realised there are so many ways to customise the sky in FSX. Thanks again for opening my eyes to the possibilities. Pics coming soon.

Good morning all... <<q

I too have been trying to find that elusive Mist.

I seldom use the Real Time Weather in REX.

Lets say I am at one of the Seaplane Bases in the ORBX Scenery of the West Coast, British Columbia, Canada for example.

What TIME AND SEASON do you think I would get the best results for the Morning Mist :?:

As for the Cloud Settings in FSX, has anyone come up with the Best Settings for the Tops and Base of the Cloud Layer yet :?:

Keep up the Great Work Gentlemen, it is Folks like you that keep me occupied in this Hobby of Flight Simulation... ;)

P.S. Those shots were not there when I first compiled this message....well done Rich...they look good...

Hi Doug, these were shot at dawn  with REX dawn textures and clouds I experimented with the type of cloud I think I ended up with Stratus with the base level set to lowest possible and up to 1000ft. It's not to bad for screen shots but still a bit hit and mist  for flying.

Once again thanks have to go to Old AirMail for the info and ideas.

There are some payware weather generators out there that I believe will allow you to do this. I am using Active Sky Next and it allows you to define what kinds of clouds you want. This is from this site http://hifisimtech.com/?title=Welcome%20To%20HiFi They have just released the latest version and you can download it for free on a trial basis there is also a graphics software that is sold separately that will allow you do do pretty much what ever you want.
If you all ready have a graphics software You can use it as well.
I have really been pleased with this company's software I have been using it for quit while now and it has never disappointed me.
You're wasting your time and efforts trying to get the default weather in FSX to generate this. you will need some kind of software to do this with free or otherwise.
Something like this is the way to go it creates real world weather in all of your waypoints in your flight plans. It makes flying about as real as it can get.
There are other similar software out there that does the same thing so go with what you know or trust.
But I like the fly before you buy method myself.
