I, for one, didn't know about it.

Don't know what significance it has for me, not being a steam user.

Anyone got a clue if FSX:Boxed edition and/or Prepar3d users can use FSX:Steam aircraft?

Dovetail got from Microsoft only the rights for commercialisation of FSX. FSX steam (SE) is strictly FSX acceleration sold by Dovetail in Steam.
Dovetail has made only changes allowed in the agreement with MS, and FSX-SE runs far better than FSX boxed.
All FSX (boxed or SE) addons have the same compatibility with P3D.
FSX-SE can be installed alone or alongside (dual) with FSX. The addon installers must follow the correct SE path, that's why there are "Steam" addons.

So if I were to buy and aircraft thru Steam, I'd be able to install it in FSX(boxed edition) without a problem?

FSX:Steam is not needed?

FSX-SE is installed (in dual installations-Win7):

Main program: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\FSX
Scenery: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX-SE
FSX.cfg: C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE

FSX_Boxed in:
Main Program: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Scenery: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX
FSX.cfg: C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX

If the installer allows browse for the FSX-boxed path, the install should be direct.
If the installer only recognises FSX-SE path, you can create a "fake" FSX-SE in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\FSX and then copy to FSX-boxed or P3D the installed addon.

The normal runaround, got it. Thanks.

I'm not likely to need it, just curious.

Most of my FSX/P3d add-ons usually wait for holiday sales.
