FSX Freezing Up During Flight

Lately I've been experiencing FSX freezing up during flight. By this I mean shortly after cruising at assigned altitude the game just freezes up and the Task Bar states that the FSX is not responding. Of course that ends the game. Oddly however I don't experience any problems when flying around a city and making touch and go flights and this includes any type of aircraft. The scenery look normal. I re-installed my FSX with Acceleration using previously published instructions and I also updated the driver on my video card. I didn't have this problem before and I already got the settings at normal and the Frame rate down to 20. My mobo has a PCIe 2.0 bus and I understand that I am restricted in using PCIe 2.0 GPUs, is this correct? What went wrong or what can I do about it except don't play FSX for extended flights. I can use some help.

Mine freezes when I try to bump up simulation rate above 4X on long flights. Does fine while in 8X but as soon as I take it off back to normal or slower speed it crashes. Other than that I am fine.

Interesting. How do you change Simulation Rate? Maybe I'll try that.

Are you using FSX or FSX Steam, I ask because FSX on my PC would crash quite regularly, since getting the Steam Edition it has not crashed once, same computer, same OS and same Addons.

"Alt" key to get menu at the top, click options, then you will see simulation rate. Choose one 8X is as fast as you can go with Auto Pilot engaged.

Exact same here. Since FSX-Steam Edition I now have zero crashes, zero "out of memory" crashes, smoother, and higher framerates.

On regular boxed FSX I had the same problems as Bubblehead describes above. It was just "normal" for me.

Good luck with that Bubblehead, I know how maddening it is as I suffered all of that for many years.

For what it is worth Since I updated Windows 10 back in November I have had no problems at all. Now mind you I hardly ever go past a slew speed of 4 and when I do use 8 it is not for long but I have never had any problems.
The only time I ever had memory problems was when I was using a very old 32 bit system with only 3.2 gigs of usable ram. Also I think my longest flight was from San Fransisco to Hawaii
I just do not like long flights. Even though I have flown around the earth several times I break up the flights to more manageable legs. I have a couple of aircraft capable of making longer flights I just do not fly routes much longer than 4 to 5 hours.

I'm using FSX. I've never heard of FSX Steam. How can I load that?

Steam is more dual core compatible than FSX. FSX came out about the same time multi core processors were coming out but did not take advantage of it. Microsoft sold rights and such and Steam and P3D did more work o it in different direction making it more compatible to multi core processors.

If you have mods installed (as most of us do) there could be all sorts of things going on to mess up the program. A clean install, daunting though that may be, might be the only cure. I'm just wondering if you've tried this:

http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

I know it's "old hat" so please don't flame me for stating the obvious. Could it be that the Steam version applies the fix automatically?

It has fixed a lot of problems for me on various computers and I'm now running FSX (boxed version - I hate Steam) on Win 10, with all settings maxed out, loads of mods, and no problems

I must say, that with a number of computer builds, and installations of all the Flight Sims since FS '95, I cant recall having any problems with any of them over the intervening years.
My present Boxed FSX and Steam FSX, (using my Intel i7 3.9 GHz processor and AMD 3770 series video card), both run a treat, with everything maxed (Frame rate sensible LOCKED at 25 FPS).

No Problemo!..... ...!

Paul..... :D ...!

With my present FSX running so well, I still haven't felt the need to go over to P3D at the moment!.... :D ...!

Do I need to uninstall the Boxed FSX before installing FSX Steam? Will add-on aircraft listed in Simviation work with FSX Steam?

No.

If it works on one it should work on the other.

Fozzer: Since with your rig you are not experiencing any problems playing FSX you must doing something right. I have a 3.5 GHz AMD FX-8320 CPU and an AMD Radeon HD 6670 with the latest driver and I can hardly move settings to the right and my game freezes up. Is it possible that my Box FSX is corrupted? This happens to my other PC with a slighter better CPU and GPU. I don't want to invest in another GPU such as a GTX 950 if it won't make any difference. I can't upgrade my CPU any better that will make a difference. if this don't work I'm going back to the FS2004.

Bubble... :D ...!

I wonder if your problems may be due to excessive dust, cobwebs, spiders, mice, bats, illegal immigrants, etc, affecting the ventilation of the computer and its various hardware, causing overheating problems?

I have to regularly clean out all the ventilation fans in the case, and the circuit board. A particular problem if the computer is stood on the floor (dusty carpets, etc).

I need a housekeeper...perhaps?..... ...!

Paul.....venting my feelings!..... ....!
