Glider Tow Plane

Postby Shadowcaster » Sat Apr 16, 2016 11:31 pm

Been re-living my youth with the Slingsby T-21 Glider using Winch-X, also using the default tow plane Maule 260. I then thought it would good fun to have a go with the Rick Piper Chipmunk as the tow plane so I found out how to to change over to a new default and I can't get it work. I can change to the C172 and Aircreation 582SL but not the Chippie or it seems, any other non Microsoft aircraft, apart from Just Flights DC-3 or the Halifax that comes with the Horsa Glider. I am thinking there must be a config entry somewhere to allow a plane to become a tug, if so does anyone know where it's too.

Cheers
Rich

Funny you should mention this. I got it working last week with the He 111Z in this Gigant package following the included instructions. http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=gigantpack&categoryId=

I wasn't very successful with the tow.

Thanks for replying, nice package but the instructions included are the ones I've been using. I've done some more testing and you can tow some aircraft, so far I've used the JF Chipmunk, FR Super Cub and the JF Tiger moth. They all tow but not very well, they tend to veer of the runway (torque effect  ) and don't seem to climb very well. I'm sure that a config file needs modifying but that's beyond my limited old brain.

I'm not very good at this aero-tow lark, especially from Spot View. With the ones I've tried so far I've found the gliders tend to overtake the 3rd party tow planes. It's possible some CFG file needs tweaking..

You and me both, but it's fun trying, the Horsa behind the Halifax is one of the hardest I've tried. Not quite sure what I was doing wrong (addled old brain) but I seem to be able to use most planes including Rick's Chippie.

Very funny.

After reading through the instructions with the Gigant package carefully it seems the easiest method of doing this is to match the glider to the tug. I've just carried out my first successful aero-tow with Wolfgang Piper's Schleicher K7 towed by Rick Piper's Chipmunk. After releasing the tow at 3,000 ft I even made it back to the airfield - just! Tremendous fun. 8-)

I would like to take the opportunity to bring back a nice little program to your memories: Luc's F-SCHLEPP
Just a small external program which will help you choose the towing aircraft, and assign a flight pattern to it (so that it can tow you in circles, for example).
It was created to replace Aerotow, which had become unreliable.
