FSX and Google Earth

I use GE a lot and have often though it would beat hands down any payware scenery and be FREE!! ..... ( I'm not one for spending $$ on FSX payware) Little research and found this in another forum

In my opinion, the Google earth view is often spectacular in mountainous areas, but cities that have the low altitude stereo imagery are impressive as well.

GE View consists of two files, HttpX.dll that accesses pertinent A:Vars from Flight Sim and makes them readable to a web application, and earth.html, the web app that opens Google earth and uses the A:Vars to control Google earth’s camera view. Those files, plus an installation guide, are attached to this posting.

In the works:

Oculus VR view: Robbie has completed a beta version of GE View that uses the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headset (Development Kit 2 headset). It’s very cool to move your head around and see the Google earth 3D world around you as Flight Sim flies. Further work will await commercial release of the Oculus Rift VR headset and/or advancements in how the Google earth browser plug-in is implemented.

On the horizon:

Enhanced HttpX.dll: Expansion of functionality to read all types of Flight Sim variables and capability to write to L:Vars and fire events from html. This would facilitate development of a MFD on a tablet, for example. For a related product, please also check out http://websimconnect.webs.com/. Many will find that interesting as well. HttpX.dll does not use any websimconnect code, but I believe the underlying idea of joining Flight Sim with a web application is the same.

Admittedly, none of these are mainstream Flight Simulator applications, just additional interesting things that can be done. But if you’ve never been to the Alps, let GE View give you an aerial tour!

Security Note: HttpX opens a TCP port (54321) on the machine running Flight Simulator. While every effort was made to ensure there are no vulnerabilities, as best practice you should restrict access to this port to your local machine or local network (for those behind home routers, most will allow external access only to whitelisted ports by default anyway). As such, use this software at your own risk.

Gonna give it a try ...... Anyone else used Google Earth with FSX?

Edited the link. Think it works now. I just pasted the article but I think it's good now

I forgot to mention the aspect of virtual reality and FSX ......

As has been said, FSX just about reached the pinacle (& beyond) of what was possible with virtual flying and what PC's of today could handle. Thank you to MS for leaving us this open ended, addonable by anyone, brilliant piece of software to develop and bring forward to the future where VR will become the next stage of entertainment - including Microsoft Flight Simulator virtual reality.

This is something I have been wanting for years and now that I've installed it I can genuinely say I haven't enjoyed FS as much since maybe 2000.

How it works is that GE view uses a browser screen as a full view screen while FSX is running.

How to use it: (See strikers link above to download and install GEView files)

1 - start FSX -

2 - then open GEView in Firefox (Internet Explorer does not work with GEView)

You then have FSX and GEView running and you can switch to GEView as a full screen VFR window.

It's great fun to fly around areas of the world in a pretty realistic vision. There is a downside that you cannot pan around like you can in VC mode and there is no weather -- but the upside is a realistic earth to fly over and a sense of height never before achieved in FS

Great to see you enjoying it Pete!
Surprised there isn't more interest in this. It has to be one of the greatest leaps forward in flight simulation ever. Flying FSX or P3D in the real world!!

I'm looking for a way to pan around in GEView using the joystick hat. The guy who created it was apparently trying to get a code to make that possible. If I find that I'll post here.

To down load this you have to click on the down arrow in the upper right hand corner by where it asks you to log in.
I plan on checking this out this weekend or maybe sooner depending.
Thanks for the link.; 8-) <<v

Thought I give this a try. Copied HttpX.dll into the main folder as well as ... AppDate\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX just to make sure. Then I edited dll.xml to the following:
</SimBase.Document>
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>HttpX</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<ManualLoad>False</ManualLoad>
<Path>Modules\HttpX.dll</Path>
<DllStartName>module_init</DllStartName>
<DllStopName>module_deinit</DllStopName>
</Launch.Addon>

Started up FSX Day and Summer in 0.50 view in windowed view and started up earth.html and all i got were these. I used IE at first and switched to Firefox. I also had the dll.xml edited exactly how it was written here and it still didn't work. Maybe a little more specific on initiating GE with FSX or else I'm missing something probably very simple.

To use VR for FSX you need to install some progammes. Please tell me which programmes that are and if they will work with a Valve Index.

Thanks for help and kind regards,

hertzie.

For VR you'll have to use a software called FlyInside FSX.
https://flyinside-fsx.com/Home/AddOns
It has a free trial version that you can try to check if it works well with your headset :)

Well, I haven't tried with FSX so I have no experience with that program, but I believe it's all you need, yes.
I'm sure youtube is full of reviews though, due to how popular this program was. It should be easy to find some videos explaining everything, so I would recommend you to take the time to watch a few of them, to get a more precise idea of what is needed or not.

From my side, when I for my very first VR headset, I had already switched to P3Dv4, which had native VR support and didn't need any external programs for VR.
Nowadays I use MSFS in VR, also native support, but I had to buy Virtual Desktop just because it makes my Pico4 work better ;)

Hi Daube, I've sent a mail to FlyInside support with the question if it will work with a Valve Index. Let you know what the answer will be.
