I have an older acquaintance, 70 'ish, who's somewhat interested in a flight sim, and not interested at all in a flight game.

I do have an unused FSX disk set with an unused license.

But I remember my confusion the very first time that I used FSX.

Would FSX: SE be easier for someone totally new to FSX?

Simply: Yes it is.

Every now and again I fire up my copy of Steam FSX-SE, and notice just how plain the scenery is, compared to my original FSX with all its pay-ware and free-ware add-on scenery, etc.

The thought of having to reinstall all those wonderful programs into the Steam Edition fills me with dread, and makes me wonder if it is worth the trouble, especially as my Gaming Computer can take everything, including FSX, that I throw at it!

Is there an easy way to point FSX-SE to recognise all my FSX settings and add-ons, all in one go, without having to re-install everything?

At the moment, my FSX-SE is merely a back-up, just in case my original Microsoft FSX CD's go belly-up!

Pretty easy..
When adding scenery within FSX:SE, just point to the scenery files/folders within your FSX instead of FSX:SE. Payware just might have to be re-installed.

Wobbie, that "Advice" may be fine, "IF" all you have is a Basic install of Flight Simulator & maybe only a handful of add on's, rather freeware or payware.

BUT, for Seasoned Veterans who've been at it a while and acquired a LOT of additional Add On's ( in my case, well over 700 +), it isn't as Easy, tying your shoe laces and, Presto' your good to go ~ !!

and NOT everything just goes into the "Add On Scenery Folder", as some try to say !

More "Advanced complicated scenery", has Files that go Directly into other places, meaning particular Folders in certain places or the scenery won't work Display properly without "issues" !!

Then theres other Scenery folders & files that have certain "Priorities" that "absolutely have to be placed in a particular order" above or below another folder to work correctly & properly within the Simulator !

Also, theres some scenery, that are registered and moving those registered folders & files out of a particular area, will cause another issue later on', when purchasing from an Add On Developer or Flight Sim Store, when it comes time to purchase whatever, as their system looks for your Registered Customer Data to Authenticate your purchase & downloads.

So, its NOT quite as easy as some are offering the advice thru out the forum boards.

Fine if your a Basic user with very few ad ons and very little hardware, but for the more advanced seasoned hardcore Flight Simmers

little bit more to it than the Generic / Basic Flight Sim users out there.

I think that you have convinced me to to carry on with my original MS version of FSX.

I have accumulated loads of add-on stuff, freeware and payware, over the years for it, and as my i-7 Gaming Computer copes more than adequately with my original FSX.... ...

....I think I will just keep my "Steam Version" just as a back-up program only!

At present, my MS FSX with all its extra bits and bobs, looks much better than my FSX-SE.... ....!

Loading times may be a bit slow compared to my FSX-SE, but that may be due to all the extra stuff that has to be loaded into my MS FSX!.... ....!

The Steam Version may be fine for a brand-new installation!

Like Jet and Foz I will keep with my original version of FSX
You have to remember that you have to logon to steam to play FSXSE and I am not convinced that all of the payware scenery and aircraft will display correctly due to limitations of the steam server.
But for a person just starting out and does not plan on adding a whole lot than the steam edition is the way to go.

I have been running FSX SE for quite a few weeks now with Windows 10 I have installed most of my add-ons including ORBX scenery pay-ware / free-ware aircraft REX ect. In fact I have yet to come across something that does not work even FS2004 port overs work well. It runs better than ever, also you do not have to go on-line to play FSX and Steam most definitely does not store your add-ons on their servers only the ones you have bought from them. From the installation point of view Steam is much easier to install but once it's up and running it's exactly the same as good old FSX with a few tweaks already done.

Easy installation,
No need of tweaks,
You can install it in several computers, dowload copies of the program if you need.
Free updates.
All my addons work OK.

Steve's fix and DirectX10: Dovetail shoud consider an integration of this fix in the program.

I'm using FSX-SE and P3D3. One advantage of FSX is that you have real weather inside the program.

Next time I see him, I'll suggest FSX: SE.

I'm assuming that if I print one of the FSX Acceleration keyboard commands PDF sheets to give him that it'll work for FSX: SE? I wasn't able to find one on Steam.

The program is strictly FSX, the commands, buttons etc. are the same.

The list shoud be OK

I use ACTIVE SKY NEXT for FSX and ACTIVE SKY EVOLUTION FOR FS9 They leave the default weather in the dust
With Active Sky Next the weather is as close to the real thing as you can get it will even depict a hurricane with amazing accuracy
The default will not come close to that.
It also puts real world weather in all of your flight plans if you want it to. It makes flying a true experience.

I picked up Active Sky Next for my installation of FSX-SE. No joke. I was shocked by the difference. Love it.
