Hawaiian Checkout

I used to have a lot of problems finding the whales in this mission. Google was not my friend in this case, so I was forced to figure it out myself. I've talked to expert pilots on other forums who couldn't get this achievement. I'm guessing that a fair number of beginner and intermediate users might find this helpful.

How to quickly find the humpback whales in Hawaiian Checkout:

Take off from Molokai Airport and follow the route programmed into the GPS. This works best if you use the Autopilot's NAV function. To slave the NAV to the GPS, press the CDI softkey twice. Stay at least 4000 ft to avoid hitting the mountains.

When the copilot starts talking about the whales and says "If we're lucky we might see one," turn to a heading of 360 and start descending to 500 feet. You'll want to start your descent at a rate of 3500 ft per minute, and gradually decrease the descent rate as you approach 500 ft. Idle the throttle to avoid overstressing the airplane.

During the descent, the copilot should point out an entire pod of whales. Fly toward the pod until he points out an individual animal, at which point the mission will award you with a snapshot of a breaching whale. Press Esc to confirm that you have received the award. Continue flying and land at Hana airport to complete the mission and receive your award.

These screenshots display he distance from each landmark indicated on the mission compass. If these instructions don't work, you can use the distances and directions from these landmarks to find the pod.

Enjoy!
