When in 'Spot' mode, I often like to have a look around the aircraft - suddenly, I'm in top-down view and cannot alter this. I've checked the control options and this is specified correctly, but I'm still getting top-down. Any ideas please?

Welcome, Dempsey.

When you first start using FSX it can be more than a little bit confusing.

By the second day, I was ready to throw it in the trash. The only thing that stopped me was the fact that a lot of people liked it.

Anyway. There are a lot of ways to learn this, and a good way to start would be to search for an "FSX keyboard command list".

They may vary a bit depending on which version of FSX you have.

This is part of one, and may be of help.

If you want you can take a cheap keyboard and set it up just for your flight sim.

There are lots of ideas, this is just one.

Here's a post that I did sometime ago - Extra Keys

One of the things that I did was to turn a numeric keypad into a GPS controller so I wouldn't need to keep using the mouse to program the onscreen GPS.

Like I said, there are lots of ideas around.

This is a great idea
I wish I had thought of it.
I use the switches on my Throttle that came with my Cessna Flight Yoke from SAITEK to control all kinds of different functions

MS tweaked the default views a bit from FS2004. The views are now listed within view categories (cockpit, outside, aircraft, runway, tower, and air trafffic). Top-Down and Spot are both in the Outside category, so pushing A a couple of times should get you back to spot view. You can use A to switch between any views in the same category, and S will cycle through the view categories. I consider this to be an improvement over the small cockpit/VC/spot/top-down/tower view from FS2004 and before, but some consider it a hinderance. Really my only complaint is that the camera distance gets screwed up on your next flight if you crash in spot or locked spot view.
