multiple aircraft in a single sim file.

I am familiar with how to edit the aircraft.config file to change the aircraft texture displayed. What do I have to edit to prevent some sims showing more types than I actually want? I mean that when I am given multiple choice in the 'change aircraft' window, how do I limit it to displaying a single aircraft?

1. Open FSX
2. Choose "free flight".
3. Click "change".
4. Uncheck the "show all variations" box.

That checkbox isn't checked - if it were I'd have loads more aircraft in the Change Aircraft window! If you are familiar with the aircraft.config file you will know that it lists all the textures in the texture files and the one at position 0 is that which is displayed. What I wanted to know is how it is that with some sim files several versions are displayed and how I can limit it to a single version.

That's interesting.

Could you give an example of an aircraft you are asking about? The only way that comes to my mind of variations is if the aircraft has multiple models, like a fighter with multiple load-outs of weapons and external fuel tanks, or an aircraft with multiple types that differ physically in some way, which requires separate models.

Yes, for example the B707-1 by Guzman/Wallaert which I have just downloaded because my grandson (5) is obsessed with airliners especially Boeing and Airbus. He wants to see an example of each type and it is plain that every Boeing and Airbus jet makes quite a few aircraft. I don't need all of the three variations this B707 sim throws up. There are other files I know but this is the only one which doesn't have a problem on my PC!

I think the solution you might want to try involves editing aircraft.cfg file for each and every aircraft. First, backup a copy of any file before you attempt to edit. Then go into the cfg files, and comment out each [fltsim.n] that you don't want to ever see again. This will remove them from ever showing in thelist. It will also make it impossible to select the aircraft variant by any means until you edit the cfg back to allow it.

I get that and because I am into Arduino I understand how to comment out lines but its a bit brutal and surely somewhere there is an instruction to display all models in a single sim (like checking that box), that can be edited.

Not that I could find. The only way to limit the variations (textures, model variations...) is either to uncheck the "Show all variations" or edit the aircraft.cfg file so the variations you do not want to see are eliminated from the selection menu (Pegger's suggestion is a good way of doing that).

Okay. When I first started with FSX I used to change the texture filenames to 'untexture' it worked the same way I suppose. FSX is a wonderfully permissive prog isn't it?
Can anyone suggest a way of changing the default view when f11 is pressed to a side on aspect? At the moment it comes up as a rear view - I know you can change it with the joystick but as I said a five year old gets impatient with that!

F11 is the hot key for the "Fixed spot" view. To change the view angle, use the hat button on the joystick or the numbers on the number pad. F11 will default back to the last view angle it was at. If you were looking at the left side then went to a different view, like the cockpit, then press F11 again, it will show the left side, as before.
