Problem starting aircraft

Hello,
After following all the steps in the start up procedures, I turn the ignition key in the aircraft and the propeller will spin for a few seconds and then stop. This happens to FSX default propeller aircraft and payware aircraft. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Pressing Ctrl E will start engines but I prefer not to go that easy and unrealistic route.

This happens to me sometimes if I have a complex aircraft saved in my default flight. Start a flight with the default C172 hit Ctrl+E to start the engines.
Then save the flight as your default flight. This fixes my problem when it happens

Also, the other day this happened to me, and when I investigated further I realized I had no fuel.
Still, that's better than having a gallon or two I guess, if you're getting ready to takeoff.

Did you make sure the mixture was up Full Rich and the throttle was in a little bit? Was there a fuel cut-off switch someplace?
I'm just trying to think of possibilities...

If your trying to start a Default FSX plane there is the Kneeboard Display/Hide icon on the dash that will open the Kneeboard. I believe that FS9 has the same deal. Once you display the Kneeboard click on Check List and that will explain how to start the aircraft from a cold start.
The battery needs real close to 24 Volts to start, and Alternator/Generator output needs 28 Volts for the electrical system components. Under Settings in FSX is Controls/Buttons and Keys there is an assignment for "Repair and Refuel" mine is Ctrl + Shift + R this is suppose to recharge the battery and refuel the aircraft.
Make sure there are no "Failures" set, by clicking the Failure Button and viewing all tabs with the listed failures. Some commands to fail are set by just simple key strokes. If there are a few checked, just uncheck them.
Let us know how it goes, it doesn't take long for a battery to drain and leave you in the dark.

Thanks for all the suggestions. There are no problems with fuel or battery, so as per CHUCK79's advice, I saved the default C172, but with all controls off (cold and dark state). Reloaded, chose a different aircraft ( Maule Orion, easy to fly and powerful). No problem starting it now.
